Historia
When Marianne's father dies, she and her governess Rosemary are forced to go and live with her guardian, the Earl of Tyndell. The Earl has strict ideas about how young ladies should behave. He isn't impressed by the romantic notions Marianne has absorbed straight from the pages of a Gothic novel.

A wonderful and unique story
Revisado: 04-09-25
I am new to this author, and this is the third of her books I've read. When signing up for her newsletter (I researched her after the first book since it was so entertaining), she offers a free audiobook or short story! The audiobook is read by the author; while not a professional narration, she does a very good job at it!
I really enjoyed this story, particularly the relationship of the governess and her charge. What I've gleaned from the three books I've read is that the author has a wonderfully descriptive way of writing unique stories. The dialog is witty and fun and the heroines are generally straightforward and somewhat older. The writing reminds me of Georgette Heyer and, to some degree, Mary Kingswood (both on my favorite authors list) in that the characters are well-defined and interesting!
While the stories I've read from this author do not fully conform to the period in various ways (this is something that makes me crazy sometimes; particularly when historical characters are written with modern thinking which is why I generally keep to clean HR), I have found the story and characters too fun and interesting to let it hinder my enjoyment.
I did have one quibble with this book in the development of the attraction between the main characters. I wasn't able to follow or understand the basis for the development of feelings between them, particularly on Rosie's side. There was a particular scene on a stairway at night that didn't quite sit well with me. I have some issue with historical romance where there is sexual attraction or sexual feelings for a virgin that are understood; it doesn't ring true to the period when women were kept so sheltered. I couldn't understand why Rosie was attracted to Giles enough to love him; I would have expected him to have had to done more in kindnesses or service to the two women or for there to have been more private conversations where respect and feelings were engaged for her to develop such emotion. That said, I still very much enjoyed this book!
So, I will continue to read this author because I am very entertained by her writing (although it has cost me a few hours of sleep LOL)!

Great read!
Revisado: 02-26-23
I wouldn't really call this a paranormal romance book...it had far more backstory and meat than what paranormal normally has. I'm not a big fan of paranormal; I usually look for books with a chick holding a weapon on the cover since urban fantasy is more my thing. This book did a great job of providing a romance but without the usual angst.
It isn't a perfect novel...I could point out several things that made me a little crazy. But overall, I really enjoyed this and am happy to move on to the second book of the series. The narrator is awesome and the story is wonderfully original.

Great story with rough narration
Revisado: 02-07-23
The narrator's pacing was very odd...filled with hesitations that were distracting! Had to increase the playback speed to try to minimize it. Loved the story and the characters though!

Awesome addition to the Kate Daniels world!
Revisado: 08-07-18
Ah man...I so love Ilona Andrews books! Awesome as usual. Set in Kate Daniels world, and with the opportunity to mix the two series' characters, I really look forward to seeing where this goes! The narrator did an awesome job...his accents and voice changes never threw me out of the story. Great to see Hugh in a new light, and Elara is a very interesting character. Kinda like that they harass the hell out of each other, although I hope that isn't a permanent thing! Looking forward to the next book!

Historia
The Dowager Lady Worthington isn't quite sure what to make of country-girl Dorothea Stern. As the granddaughter of the Duke of Bristol, Dotty is schooled in the ways and means of the nobility. But her sharp wit and outspoken nature has everyone in a tizzy. Especially their cousin, Dominic, the Marquis of Merton. Prematurely stuffy, Dom was raised by his cheerless uncle to be wary of a host of things, including innovation, waltzing, and most perilous of all: true love. Still, there's something about Dotty, beyond her beauty, that Dom cannot resist.

Narrator is terrible!
Revisado: 01-29-17
I've only made it 38 minutes into this and I'm returning it and just reading the Kindle book. The narrator is terrible! Choppy elocution due to over-pronunciation of every single syllable so that *everyone* sounds like an old, pompous ass no matter what their age or sex! I gave the story 4 stars only based on on the other reviews but felt I needed to comment on the narration since no one else has given a review on the Audible book...

Enjoyed this story with great action, pacing, world building and characters. Narration was actually very good except it sounded like the narrator had a stuffy nose most of the time! Other than that, her voices were very well done....
