Historia
In They Just Seem a Little Weird, veteran entertainment journalist Doug Brod offers an eye- and ear-opening look at a crucial moment in music history, when rock became fun again and a gig became a show. This is the story of friends and frenemies who rose, fell, and soared once more, often sharing stages, studios, producers, engineers, managers, agents, roadies, and fans-and who are still collaborating more than 40 years on.

Quick-moving and enjoyable
Revisado: 05-05-24
Enjoyed this book, which was well-written and included a lot of good anecdotes about the bands. Even though it was published in late 2020, it cuts off in around 2010, so you won't learn much about Cheap Trick's acrimonious breakup with Bun E. Carlos, or about their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction in 2016. The same is true of Kiss and Aerosmith...not much about what they've been doing since 2010, such as their final tours and the accusations that Paul Stanley has been lip synching onstage. Nevertheless, it's a good guide to the bands' early moments and glory days. The contrast with Starz, the "band who never made it", is entertaining, although having found some Starz videos on YouTube it's no surprise to me that they were not successful. Anyway, a good audiobook that's never dull. Recommended.

Historia
Rolling Stone founder, co-editor, and publisher Jann Wenner's deeply personal memoir vividly describes and brings you inside the music, the politics, and the lifestyle of a generation, an epoch of cultural change that swept America and beyond. The age of rock and roll in an era of consequence, what will be considered one of the great watersheds in modern history. Wenner writes with the clarity of a journalist and an essayist. He takes us into the life and work of Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Mick Jagger, Bono, and Bruce Springsteen, to name a few.

Laughable politics, but otherwise entertaining
Revisado: 10-03-22
Easy to listen to, entertaining story of a life in the media biz, bearable if you can put aside the author's laughable politics. Wenner doesn't quite understand how things have changed since he was a boy; for example, he's very proud of being part of a "free speech" rally at Berkeley in the 1960s, when these days progressives like himself distrust the concept of free speech lest it allow for hate speech. Anyway, Wenner is quite convinced that he's on the right side of history politically when he probably isn't. But he's met some interesting people and has some enjoyable stories to tell. As audiobooks go, this one was pleasant.

Historia
1936 was a great year for the movie industry - the financial setbacks of the Great Depression were subsiding, so theater attendance was up. Americans everywhere were watching the stars, and few stars shined as brightly as one of America's most enduring screen favorites, Mary Astor. But Astor's personal story wasn't a happy one. Born poor and widowed at 24, Mary Astor had spent years looking for stability when she met and wed Dr. Franklyn Thorpe.

Extremely detailed - perhaps too detailed
Revisado: 10-04-17
While I enjoyed the first half of this book, it gets very, very slow-moving when it comes to the notorious child custody trial Mary Astor is mostly remembered for (as well as her appearance in "The Maltese Falcon.") I tend to use audiobooks for listening to during workouts and meal preparation, and I found I was dreading turning this one on again. It is very, very, detailed when it comes to the trial. Perhaps too detailed for my taste.

Historia
An early architect of punk rock's sound, style, and fury, whose lip-curling sneer and fist-pumping persona vaulted him into pop's mainstream as one of MTV's first megastars, Billy Idol remains, to this day, a true rock 'n' roll icon. Now, in his long-awaited autobiography, Dancing with Myself, Idol delivers an electric, searingly honest account of his journey to fame - from his early days as front man of the pioneering UK punk band Generation X to the decadent life atop the dance-rock kingdom he ruled.

I was a Billy Idol fan back in the day and have enjoyed biographies of other musicians of the era, so I thought I would like this too. Aargh, it was awful. Idol is totally full of himself. Turned it off after 30min, will not turn on again.

Historia
Without the Sex Pistols there would be no punk. And without Steve Jones there would be no Sex Pistols. It was Steve who, with his schoolmate Paul Cook, formed the band that eventually went on to become the Sex Pistols and who was its original leader. As the world celebrates the 40th anniversary of punk - the influence and cultural significance of which is felt in music, fashion, and the visual arts to this day - Steve tells his story for the very first time.

Getting to know a great geezer
Revisado: 09-11-17
I'm not a serious Sex Pistols fan - I enjoy their music but never saw them live. I still enjoyed this book.
Jonesy narrates his own story with his great working-class London accent, and what a story it is - from unwanted son to petty thief to celebrated musician to petty thief again, then finally triumphing over drug addiction to create a second career as a radio DJ.
A few small quibbles: there's something off with the editing of this audio, so that several lines repeat themselves. And at the very end Jones goes off on some weird PC tangent in which he insists that 'white people can't be cool.' Uh, sure, Jonesy. That's some nice inspiration for the kids.
Otherwise a good listen, however. Recommended.

Historia
Joy Division changed the face of music. Godfathers of alternative rock, they reinvented music in the post-punk era, creating a new sound - dark, hypnotic, and intense - that would influence U2, Morrissey, R.E.M., Radiohead, and numerous others. The story is now legendary: In 1980, on the heels of their groundbreaking debut, Unknown Pleasures, and on the eve of their first U.S. tour, the band was rent asunder by the tragic death of their enigmatic lead singer, Ian Curtis.

I've read this book in print, but author Peter Hook's narration (with its strong local accent) adds a whole new layer to this story set in Northern England. Recommended.

Entertaining, insightful, and easy-to-listen to
Revisado: 07-01-17
I use audiobooks as background for my workouts, so I love this type of book, which is made up of short, entertaining stories. I don't have any personal feelings about Mr. Wagner himself, having never seen any of his movies or TV shows (except for a recent appearance on TV Land), but the women he writes about are known to all, and he has some entertaining stories and insights about them. Recommended.

Fun, but a bit too political for my taste
Revisado: 05-22-17
Wonderful insights about Lisa's days with classic bands like The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin. Unfortunately, halfway through the author/reader starts going on and on about George W Bush, whom she dislikes. It's dated and boring. Recommended for the first half only.

What made the experience of listening to Elizabeth and Philip the most enjoyable?
Although the narrator of this book was excellent, the story stops in the early 1990s, missing the last 25 years of this ongoing romance.

Great for listening in small bits
Revisado: 04-19-17
Would you listen to Undisclosed Files of the Police again? Why?
This audiobook is perfect for people who like to listen in small bits - on the treadmill, while doing dishes, etc. Each story is self-contained and gripping enough to get you through a few minutes of doing something else that's not that fun.
Any additional comments?
Some obvious audio editing problems - the sound fades in and out at times, and you can definitely hear where pick-ups were inserted. Doesn't distract too much.
