Historia
Jack Gantos' rocket-paced follow-up to the Newbery Medal–winning novel Dead End in Norvelt opens in the 1960s, deep in the shadow of the Cold War and the Cuban missile crisis. But instead of Russian warheads, other kinds of trouble are raining down on young Jack Gantos and his utopian town of Norvelt in western Pennsylvania. After an explosion, a new crime by an old murderer, and the sad passing of the town's founder, twelve-year-old Jack will soon find himself launched on a mission that takes him hundreds of miles away.

Historia
Melding the entirely true and the wildly fictional, Dead End in Norvelt is a novel about an incredible two months for a kid named Jack Gantos, whose plans for vacation excitement are shot down when he is "grounded for life" by his feuding parents, and whose nose spews bad blood at every little shock he gets. But plenty of excitement (and shocks) are coming Jack's way once his mom loans him out to help a fiesty old neighbor with a most unusual chore—typewriting obituaries filled with stories about the people who founded his utopian town.

Historia
But now Lillian herself is dead. Found among the bleeding hearts and lilacs of Clara Morrow's garden in Three Pines, shattering the celebrations of Clara's solo show at the famed Musée in Montreal. Chief Inspector Gamache, the head of homicide at the Sûreté du Québec, is called to the tiny Quebec village and there he finds the art world gathered, and with it a world of shading and nuance, a world of shadow and light. Where nothing is as it seems. Behind every smile there lurks a sneer. Inside every sweet relationship there hides a broken heart.

Is life a trick of the light or a miracle?
Revisado: 05-26-21
The story as engrossing as Louise Penny always promises, read so well that I enjoy listening repeatedly. The gems are in Penny's insights about relationships and the miracles which our journeys can be.

Historia
Begin Again is one of the great books on James Baldwin and a powerful reckoning with America’s ongoing failure to confront the lies it tells itself about race. Just as in Baldwin’s “after times,” argues Eddie S. Glaude Jr., when white Americans met the civil rights movement’s call for truth and justice with blind rage and the murders of movement leaders, so in our moment were the Obama presidency and the birth of Black Lives Matter answered with the ascendance of Trump and the violent resurgence of white nationalism.

There is so much to chew on in this book that I often found myself hitting the back key to listen more closely to a section. I look forward to chewing on those sections some more in the hard copy of the book I purchased. I am most grateful to Eddie ...for opening this door to "Jimmy."

Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

Charting the course of an uncertain life - and feeling guilt from her husband's tragic death - Merritt travels from her home in Maine to Beaufort, where the secrets of Cal's unspoken-of past reside among the pluff mud and jasmine of the ancestral Heyward home on the Bluff.

WARNiNG: you will make time to listen
Revisado: 06-29-16
What made the experience of listening to The Sound of Glass the most enjoyable?
Unlike the cheesy comment, I felt reality. My mother married my father and later his brother and the varied relationships in the marriages were very similar to Merritt's relationships to Cal and Gibbs. I could also relate to the developing sister and half brother connections as that has also been true in our family. I could feel fear, love, doubt throughout the book. Laughter, rooting for change, sadness at missed opportunities...I could feel all of them.
What did you like best about this story?
The character detail was nicely balanced with a good plot pace. I learned a lot about Southern traditions.
Have you listened to any of Therese Plummer and Susan Bennett ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
First one for me, and I am so glad there are more.
If you could take any character from The Sound of Glass out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Edith because she saw the world around her in such depth.
