Historia
In 1980, a wealthy businessman named Carl Fletcher is kidnapped from his driveway, brutalized, and held for ransom. He is returned to his wife and kids less than a week later, only slightly the worse, and the family moves on with their lives, resuming their prized places in the saga of the American dream, comforted in the realization that though their money may have been what endangered them, it is also what assured them their safety.

Disgusting, vulgar and racist
Revisado: 08-26-24
This book should be listed with a warning that it includes explicit and lengthy descriptions of BDSM and self-harm as well as every conceivable anti-Semitic trope, stereotype and characterization. If the author is Jewish, she is self-hating; if she is not, she is deplorable beyond description and deserves to be cancelled (in the 21st century meaning of the term). Her characters are money loving, whining, ugly, weak, mother-hating, mother-dominated, father-ineffectual, neurotic, and completely unlikable -- because, by the author's description, they are Jewish.
Sex in a novel is fine and while I revile antisemitism, I support free speech. But a warning before purchasing is called for so I don't end up unwittingly listening to such monumental dreck.

Historia
For a person who has not encountered John McPhee's lively writing, The Second John McPhee Reader is the perfect introduction. McPhee, author of Coming Into the Country, and Assembling California punctuates his delightful prose with a sharp sense of humor and a fascination with things most of us never bother to notice.

Not what I expected
Revisado: 11-08-23
The vast majority of the chapters in this book were excerpts from McPhee’s Alaska and geology books. Having previously slogged through both of those, I was looking forward to an assortment of more topical articles, but there really were only one or two. A real disappointment.
The narration was superb.
