Herbie reveals how much of a true artist he is in Possibilities. He doesn’t appear to consider the financial impact or even the family impact of his choices. It’s all about the music, the musicians and where the music can go. Bravo to his artistry.

Read this book with a sociology dictionary. I really wanted to like this book. This is an academic dissertation where the author misses the opportunity to relay the very important historical arguments of the book by the over use of series after series of overly complex, overly precise phrases. This prevents the reader/listener from fully engaging to understand, accept or even disagree because the unnecessarily complex language forces the average reader to constantly go back and review paragraphs for clear understanding. Although the phrasing is academic and overly complex and the delivery is monotoned and disengaged, the content is compelling and eye opening.

Great book! If you are engaged in any kind of strategy work whatsoever, you need to embrace the concepts of strategic narcissism and strategic empathy. From several perspective, I think Battlegrounds is a good read - from understanding 20-21 century war history, to understanding the mindsets of recent US leaders, to gaining a perspective on the goals of US adversaries or just understanding strategy development. Battlegrounds is a well articulated perspective that seldom reveals any political bent. As McMaster writes about long term solutions, however, I could relate directly his specific training in military warfare to every proposed solution. Still, if the reader acknowledges that national leaders need to consider non military prospectives, as well, when making decisions, this is a great book to understand the military side of the equation.
