English accent
Revisado: 04-27-25
I might like to hear this narrator read a book set in England. Most Nero Wolf are set in New York City, and none of the characters are British. He gave them all English accents.

Historia
Murder is not her department. It’s not like it used to be. Modern-day grim reapers wear business casual, not black cloaks, and they don’t carry scythes, they work for S. C. Y. T. H. E. (Secure Collection, Yielding, and Transportation of Human Essences), where the Department of Natural Causes is the least exciting gig. And that’s how Kathy Valence likes it: boring and predictable. She has enough stress in her personal life; she’s mid-divorce, pregnant, and terrified she doesn’t have what it takes to be a good mom. Then, she goes to pick up a new client and finds his soul is missing.

no cliches
Revisado: 04-25-25
The book had suspense, excitement, and paranormal. But the story was beautifully human without being too sentimental, and I love the unlikely heroes. I would have liked better details about how the "swat team" got called in.

Fact: In September 1964, the Beatles, their private flight diverted by Hurricane Dora, made an unplanned visit to Key West. Fiction: Poolside at their motel, the Fab Four fell into conversation with a snappy-dressing local named Bert the Shirt, who listened as the band worked out a harmony to the most beautiful song he’d ever heard...and wouldn’t hear again for over half a century.

The narrator is not good with voices. He had two, and applied them to every character. it was excruciating.

The Count's story of what he did in the war made me weep.

The narrator would be excellent for stories set in England. This book is set in Venice. Italy. He gave all the characters British accents. It was excruciating.

so-so
Revisado: 01-14-23
I usually like these books, but this one was a bit flat. and the ending was pretty lame. Wish the narrator would learn genuine local pronunciations (e.g., Biloxi, Pass Christian, Thibodaux). Or just pick one and stick with it.

Narrator makes Joe sound like Morris the Cat
Revisado: 06-01-22
I like the story and the ongoing character development. But this narrator doesn't do the cat voices very well, especially Joe. Honestly, he sounds like Morris the cat. I keep expecting him to say "mmm Nine Lives!" What was he thinking??
I read most of this series in paperback. I have enjoyed listening to them, and it's been so long that I had forgotten more than I remembered. So it's like reading new books. I miss the previous narrator, but will probably continue to the end.

Historia
My name is Mercedes Athena Thompson Hauptman, and I am a car mechanic. And a coyote shape-shifter. And the mate of the Alpha of the Columbia Basin werewolf pack. Even so, none of that would have gotten me into trouble if, a few months ago, I hadn’t stood upon a bridge and taken responsibility for the safety of the citizens who live in our territory. It seemed like the thing to do at the time. It should have only involved hunting down killer goblins, zombie goats, and an occasional troll. Instead, our home was viewed as neutral ground.

I Loved It
Revisado: 07-05-21
I loved the story. It had enough drama and humor to keep me engrossed. The science was perfectly integrated with the story in a way that it didn't get boring even when it was beyond my own level (which is maybe middle school, I confess) - the story really couldn't be told without it. My dad, a mechanical engineer for the Army Missile Command in the 1960s, would have loved this book. I only wish some of the peripheral characters could have had bigger parts in the story, because they were all written so well I wanted to know more about them.
Wil Wheaton read it perfectly. I found it interesting that he didn't try to do a lot of different character voices, and yet I could always tell which character was speaking. That's excellent narration. I will be looking for more books narrated by Wil Wheaton.
