Historia
Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.

A complex and interesting read
Revisado: 08-27-24
I enjoy Kristen Hannah‘s books for the most part. I feel like I learn a lot about history while reading them, particularly women’s history. Sometimes this narrator is too dry, but not in a way that would dissuade me from listening to another book. The story is very complex, maybe two complex. It moves through about 30 years of US history high gloss on the Vietnam war, protests in the US and the difficulty some vets had in returning. It might be too difficult for some people to read, quite frankly. the flashbacks are intense as is watching some characters hit bottom. Very painful very intense scenes. There are some completely unbelievable storylines as they always are but again worth the read.

They were just friends. Best friends. They spent entire summers sitting on Shiloh’s porch steps, dreaming about the future. They promised each other that, no matter what, their friendship would never change. Well, Shiloh did go to college, and Cary did join the Navy. And yet, somehow, everything changed.

Revisado: 08-05-24
I loved this book. I looked for reasons to drive around just to listen to it. Such a great, light read.
I felt like I would have been friends with the main characters . The very best kind of book.
I did worry that the ending would be unsatisfying— but it was perfect.

Historia
At first, the death of millionaire businessman Charles Parsons seems like a straightforward suicide. There’s no sign of forced entry or struggle in his lavish New Jersey mansion - just a single gunshot wound from his own weapon. But days later, a different story emerges. Computer techs pick up a voice recording that incriminates Parsons’ adoptive daughter, Ann, who duly confesses and pleads guilty.

The story is a bit thin… but interesting
Revisado: 05-22-24
The plot is interesting and this is an improvement over her first novel. The first one spent a LOT of time establishing Erin’s backstory, which, while interesting, isn’t *the* story. Compared to that first book, there are many fewer references to outfits other than moments where they move the story along (eg kicking someone with pointy toe shoes). This novel is purposefully confusing in parts, which ultimately works for the story line, but is really a little confusing for an audiobook.
I will continue reading these novels for a few reasons:
1. Erin went to Temple Law ♥️- GO Owls!
2. Poking fun at NJ is always a win
3 Erin’s mother is a great character
4 Swish is, too… and if you kill him off I will stop reading immediately.
Seriously— I think reading novels about trans characters is an important way to understand the issues trans folks experience in their day to day lives and it is incumbent on all of us to learn and do better.

Listening to this audio book is a commitment! I had heard about it from several people but the 1000+ page length of the book put me off. Listening to a 40+ hour audiobook was great. The story took a chapter or two to get into it— but when I did—- wow! It just blew me away!I can’t wait to go on to book 2!

Another Terrific Strike Novel
Revisado: 04-18-23
The performance is always terrific. Every time I finish listening one of these novels, I immediately want to listen again for clues that I missed.
I love the tension between Robin and Strike— it adds an interesting sideline to the story at hand.
Looking forward to the next one!

Be careful… I might like this series more than CSM!
Revisado: 10-22-22
At first, I thought I would never love the Time Police novels as much as their parent series, the Chronicles of St Mary’s… but the last couple have me wondering if I might like them even more. I’m trying to decide why that is— and I think it might be that we get to know all of the characters a bit more where CSM is so Max-centered, all characters are viewed through her lens. I still love CSM and just re-read the entire series and TP series from start to finish. They are both terrific series and my only disappointment is that I finish them way too soon!

Revisado: 11-26-21
I’m left-leaning, politically, so this was right up my alley. Those who typically vote conservative probably wouldn’t buy a novel by HRC but they definitely will have moments that will make them feel uncomfortable. Thinly-veiled references to Trump and Putin, which I loved, but which might not sit well with some. A fast-paced, plot-driven work with lots of twists and turns. I got a new appreciation for the Secretary of State role. Highly recommend!!
