Historia
Tina Knowles, the mother of iconic singer-songwriters Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, Solange Knowles, and bonus daughter Kelly Rowland, is known the world over as a Matriarch with a capital M: a determined, self-possessed, self-aware, and wise woman who raised and inspired some of the great artists of our time. But this story is about so much more than that. Matriarch begins with a precocious, if unruly, little girl growing up in 1950s Galveston, the youngest of seven.

Oh The Wisdom
Revisado: 04-27-25
I’m thrilled that Tina saw fit to share the pearls of wisdom that she has stockpiled over her lifetime. Not sharing them would have truly been travesty. Thanks for sharing this example of how it’s ok to move on from full time mothering when it is appropriate and living a life that doesn’t revolve around your kids and other family members. It’s also a plus that it’s in her own voice, including the emotions that the memories evoked.

Kudos to Lauren for pursuing this case. Your mother would be proud. It’s commendable that you are able to come to terms with the fact that you may never get the answer you deserve.

Historia
On February 17, 2022, Brittney Griner arrived in Moscow ready to spend the WNBA offseason playing for the Russian women’s basketball team where she had been the centerpiece of previous championship seasons. Instead, a security checkpoint became her gateway to hell when she was arrested for mistakenly carrying under one gram of medically prescribed hash oil. Brittney’s world was violently upended in a crisis she has never spoken in detail about publicly—until now.

BG bravely shares the details of what you endured during her time incarcerated by the Russian government. I cringed every time she spoke of being caged. Her efforts to individually thank everyone who helped her is particularly remarkable.

Michele Norris, host of NPR's All Things Considered, set out to write a book about “the hidden conversation on race” that is going on in this country. But along the way, she unearthed painful family secrets. In what became an intensely personal and bracing journey, Norris traveled from her childhood home in Minneapolis to her ancestral roots in the Deep South to explore “things left unsaid” by her family when she was growing up.

History of Blacks in the Military
Revisado: 03-06-24
I’m not sure how I ended up with a book written 14 years ago. Things in terms of race have certainly changed and not for the better. However as a retired military officer, I can certainly appreciate all of the military history that was included even though it was painful to hear. I’m in my 60s and only now starting to understand how much our ancestors left unsaid. I guess it was just too painful.

Historia
Years ago, Tabitha Brown started a 30-day personal challenge that she called “I Did a New Thing!” The challenge was simple. Every day she would do something she’d never done before. Sometimes it was something small like trying a new food. Other times, she’d step it up a bit and speak to someone she’d never spoken to before. Still other times, she’d do the hard thing—facing a fear that she had, like having that tough conversation with a friend. No matter what it was, the point was that she was going to take a leap of faith and watch God open up a new lane for her.

Historia
Red Tails, George Lucas’s celebration of America’s first Black flying squadron, the Tuskegee Airmen, should have been a moment of victory for Doug Melville. He expected to see his great-uncle Benjamin O. Davis Jr.—the squadron’s commander—immortalized on-screen for his selfless contributions to America. But as the film rolled, Doug was shocked when he realized that Ben Jr.’s name had been omitted and replaced by the fictional Colonel A. J. Bullard. And Ben’s father, Benjamin O. Davis Sr., America’s first Black general who helped integrate the military, was left out completely.

Our Stories Deserve to Be Told

As an African American retired Air Force officer, I appreciate all of those who paved the way for me. One of the saddest things about this story is that those who lived it didn’t feel it was worthy of being passed on. Thanks for compiling this history and passing it on.
