Historia
A sinister cabal of corrupt law enforcement personnel, intelligence agents, and military officials at the highest levels of government plotted to overthrow a president. Even after they failed, they continue to secretly pull the levers of power without any accountability to the American people. This isn’t the synopsis of a fictional spy thriller. This is what is actually happening in the United States government.

Only ignorant people would believe this nonsense
Revisado: 02-20-25
Kash Patel mentions the Deep State at least a dozen times in the first few chapters of this book.
What is the Deep State? I wondered.
I always have assumed it must surely be a group of extremely powerful people who have managed to maintain control over the governance of our country for generations while remaining anonymous; no-one knows who they are and no-one can wrest control away from them. Perhaps they control the results of our elections, or perhaps they render the winners of elections impotent, their control is so complete.
Was Mr Patel about to reveal the identity of the individuals concerned in this dark conspiracy?
Indeed he was.
According to this imbecile, the Deep State is...
The Democrats and the free press!
The author of this rubbish has now been appointed head of the F.B.I.
I am ashamed to be an American, and fearful for the future of this country.

Historia
On his last combat deployment, Lt. Cmdr. James Reece's entire team was killed in an ambush that also claimed the lives of the aircrew sent in to rescue them. But when those dearest to him are murdered on the day of his homecoming, Reece discovers that this was not an act of war by a foreign enemy but a conspiracy that runs to the highest levels of government. Now, with no family and free from the military's command structure, Reece applies the lessons that he's learned in over a decade of constant warfare toward revenge.

Was this written by AI?
Revisado: 03-29-23
The story itself is not bad, but it feels like a book written by a computer program.
There is something missing, as though it wasn't written by a human.
Not one of the characters comes across as a real person.
Relationships have no nuance, no subtlety. Characters are simplistic and trite.

Historia
James Boswell forever changed the genre of biography when he painstakingly transformed a scholarly profusion of detail into a perceptive, lifelike portrait of Dr. Samuel Johnson. James Boswell's Life of Samuel Johnson reveals a man of outsized appetites and private vulnerabilities and is the source of much of what we know about one of the towering figures of English literature.

Perhaps I am not smart enough for this book
Revisado: 11-27-22
This is a very famous book, so I thought I might enjoy it.
I have been unable to find anything interesting in it at all. There are substantial passages read entirely in Latin, which tried my patience, in general the subject matter was very dry.
If you enjoy the short excerpt that Audible presents as a sample, then you are probably capable of enjoying the book.

You've heard of the "Great Books"? These are their evil opposites. From Machiavelli's The Prince to Karl Marx's Communist Manifesto to Alfred Kinsey's Sexual Behavior in the Human Male, these "influential" books have led to war, genocide, totalitarian oppression, family breakdown, and disastrous social experiments. And yet these authors' bad ideas are still popular and pervasive. Here with the antidote is Professor Benjamin Wiker.

Simple minded rubbish
Revisado: 10-25-22
I thought this might be a daring, imaginative and nuanced criticism of books we have come to respect, but I was mistaken.
The writer seems to think that atheism is the root cause of all that is wrong with the world and, well, he might have a point. After all, it was fanatical atheists who flew planes into the World Trade Center; devout atheists who perpetrated the Spanish Inquisition; and nowadays it's fundamentalist atheists who are such an important part of Donald Trump's following.
I wonder if Mr Wilker even read the books he is writing about. I don't see any evidence that he did.

Historia
Behind today's headlines of billionaires taking over our government is a secretive political establishment with long, deep, and troubling roots. The capitalist radical right has been working not simply to change who rules but to fundamentally alter the rules of democratic governance. But billionaires did not launch this movement; a white intellectual in the embattled Jim Crow South did.

Revisado: 06-04-14
The book is very dry, almost completely lacking in any interesting anecdotes about the characters involved. It would have made an interesting magazine article.
If this is a subject of special interest to you and especially if you are familiar with the names of the people involved, then it may well satisfy you.

Historia
In this classic account of the French war in Indochina, Bernard B. Fall vividly captures the sights, sounds, and smells of the savage eight-year conflict in the jungles and mountains of Southeast Asia from 1946 to 1954. The French fought well to the last, but even with the lethal advantages of airpower, they could not stave off the Communist-led Vietnamese nationalists, who countered with a hit-and-run campaign of ambushes, booby traps, and nighttime raids. Defeat came at Dien Bien Phu, in 1954, setting the stage for American involvement and opening another tragic chapter in Vietnam's history.

War might be hell, but it is also boring
Revisado: 03-31-14
What would have made Street Without Joy better?
This is the story of the French fighting the Viet Minh, battle by battle. It doesn't pretend to be anything else. There are endless descriptions of military maneuvers and engagements, with place names that mean very little to me. After three or four I just lost interest.

Revisado: 02-02-14
Would you try another book from Darren Reynolds and/or Diane Sawyer?
It;s my fault for wanting to revisit that extraordinary moment when I've already seen so much about it. What made it worse was being told several times how we were listening to something that had never been told before. It added nothing to my knowledge and was annoying to boot.
