Historia
When life dragged me down, I assumed I’d never get back up. I never guessed that Andras—the dark magic user I was always told to fear—would not only give me a helping hand, but draw me into his arms and protect me from those who wished to harm me. I never imagined that Andras and his “danger noodle” would be there to make me laugh, to care about me, and show me what it means to be loved. But now, the two of us have to prove to the Casters that we won’t be knocked down.

Probably DNF, halfway through
Revisado: 04-22-24
I’ll edit this if I end up finishing.
This book (and its predecessor) are not supposed to be serious literature, not just because it is M/M smut urban fantasy (long live this genre!) but also the way co-main character Andras is portrayed would totally undermine anything other than light-hearted fun plots with blahblah macguffins.
Sadly, this second book has now so far two flashback scenes with really awful child abuse (psychological, emotional) that completely destroy the mood I’m in when I sit down to listen to a lighthearted gay smutty fantasy during tike when I am cleaning or doing work on my hobby. You cannot hold “dumb fun” and heartache for a child so cruelly and graphically abused as shown here, in your mind at the same time, and somehow the author also still thinks it’s a good idea to implement Andras’ flippant tone and “nothing is serious let’s never ask questions that would solve the plot” personality almost nonstop.
Really, super duper jarring. It would be worse if some paragraphs’ style would switch to Charles Dickens-like prose, and then to Shakespearean meter, and then back to never-editted stream of consciousness writing, but that is indeed somehow the emotional jarriness of the content.
Absolutely no good for treating as light-hearted fare, and also I am unwilling to find out what payoff the author thinks is worth this gratuitous child abuse. If I can find an online spoiler to find out how the story ends I will do it, I have no faith in the author now to navigate the rest of this story. Trust broken.

Perhaps the most important fantasy I have read
Revisado: 04-03-24
Each of the prior three books of the cycle were excellent, but this feels different in an important way. I may, or may not, re-read the others, but I will surely re-read this. There is something in it, some content that feels not like a message or lesson but like something buoyant. Driftwood on a choppy sea to cling to.
I will be digesting what the author had to say, and revisiting it to see it in new ways, for years I think.

Beautiful story
Revisado: 03-28-24
I enjoyed feeling how strongly Gedd values life. His defence of it, and of death, and of the cycle that is the equilibrium was really moving. Finished the book on a plane and felt like I couldn’t do or read anything else for the next hour as I thought about it.

Historia
Though I was born with the ability to see the dead, I struggled with it until my brother was killed and his ghost was left behind. Now, I’m determined to figure out who is responsible for his death…the problem is that Detective Maddox Booker, the one working the case, is a grumpy and stubborn man who wants nothing to do with me and definitely doesn’t believe in ghosts. It doesn’t help that I keep finding myself looking ridiculous in front of the detective, thanks to interfering ghosts who enjoy laughing at my expense.

I can’t express how great this was
Revisado: 12-13-23
This is such a hidden gem of a book. I picked it up because I wanted some supernatural gay smut, and I have read a LOT of it, but I got way more than I bargained for this time. Every character became really well fleshed out and built a tapestry of a story, and I cried like five times. A bit awkward since I listened on airplanes and trains and in airports as part of my pilgrimage hoke for the holidays!
It was also deliciously horny. “Hunkalicious,” to quote the late and great Natalie.
The core relationship is brilliant and I will read every word of all future books in this series, and I’m surely going to go visit Alice Winters’ other books after this one.
I nearly had a point of critique: it was pretty clear how the “will-they-won’t they” would develop quite early on, so I had some distracting thoughts of impatience, but now having finished the book I am completely at peace with the pacing, it was all character and world building, and also gave more nuance to the relationship as it emerged.
I know for sure I will haunt Hiro when it’s my time, he’s such a great guy.

When you discover the world is a computer program, and you figure out that by altering the code you can time travel and perform acts that seem like magic, what can possibly go wrong? Pretty much everything. Just ask Brit, who has jumped around in time with such abandon that she has to coexist with multiple versions of herself. Now, Brit the Elder finds that her memories don't match Brit the Younger's.

Excellent! Finally dealing with some important implications!
Revisado: 11-23-23
I enjoyed the book, and would also have enjoyed another silly string of events where our all-powerful, occasionally idiotic protagonists make work for themselves.
What we actually got was a pretty good mystery that dealt with some of the looming implications entailed by how this whole universe works. I was broadly really satisfied, though my personal opinion of some of the characters shifted toward annoyance from admiration.
The book sets the stage for a really interesting next adventure! Downloading even as we speak :)

Sehr gut, lässt sich sehr angenehm zuhören
Revisado: 02-12-23

Historia
Human and Oankali have been mating since the aliens first came to Earth to rescue the few survivors of an annihilating nuclear war. The Oankali began a massive breeding project, guided by the ooloi, a sexless subspecies capable of manipulating DNA, in the hope of eventually creating a perfect starfaring race. Jodahs is supposed to be just another hybrid of human and Oankali, but as he begins his transformation to adulthood he finds himself becoming ooloi - the first ever born to a human mother.

Excellent final part of a terrific series
Revisado: 01-24-23
I really didn’t want a book filled with action or intense drama. I like to listen an hour or so at a time, and just enjoy the story.
This whole series has been excellent for this. Most of the book is conversations or introspection about what was learned in conversation. Pacing was fine, and I loved being able to luxuriate in the weird concepts Butler came up with to bring an alien people to life.
Honestly, the three books were a heady expedition into an alien mind. In the first, we are with Lilith as as get to know an alien race and many things are appropriately positioned as “it’s not really understandable but it’s how the Oankali work”. In the second book, we follow Lilith’s son who has much to share with us about who the Oankali are as a people. But only in this final book do we get to really understand their values and it’s chilling at times to deeply comprehend their alien-ness. In Book 1, we just saw and accepted it, but by the end of this book I get it feel really exhilarated for it.
I will buy these hard copy as well =D

In this sequel to Dawn, Lilith Iyapo has given birth to what looks like a normal human boy named Akin. But Akin actually has five parents: a male and female human, a male and female Oankali, and a sexless Ooloi. The Oankali and Ooloi are part of an alien race that rescued humanity from a devastating nuclear war, but the price they exact is a high one the aliens are compelled to genetically merge their species with other races, drastically altering both in the process.

Engaging, couldn’t multitask at all; so stimulating
Revisado: 01-13-23
Love it! Love how calm and slow the plot is, even when things are moving it is always not in a hurry. So many well-introduced ideas and mindsets. I feel like I need to get a physical copy and store it somewhere to survive an apocalypse.
The narrator nails everything, I couldn’t be happier. How does one person have so many voices!?
The first book showed us Lilith as she adapted to her new world, and we saw three major times for her: getting to know the Oankali, helping humans get set up, and finally getting ready for the return to Earth.
In this book, we follow her son through three impactful times in his early life, and I completely felt like I was right there alongside Akeen.
Can’t wait to start the final book. The teaser at the end of this one has my mind racing!

In a world devastated by nuclear war with humanity on the edge of extinction, aliens finally make contact. They rescue those humans they can, keeping most survivors in suspended animation while the aliens begin the slow process of rehabilitating the planet. When Lilith Iyapo is "awakened", she finds that she has been chosen to revive her fellow humans in small groups by first preparing them to meet the utterly terrifying aliens, then training them to survive on the wilderness that the planet has become. But the aliens cannot help humanity without altering it forever.

Excellent, slow-paced and thoughtful
Revisado: 01-05-23
I really enjoyed the book. I heard a preview on the podcast Imaginary Worlds (episode from 22 Dec 2022) where excerpts of the first worldsetting chapters were read aloud. Hooked immediately.
The tone and gravity of this book reminded me of Ursula le Guin’s Left Hand of Darkness: rarely fast-paced, conversation-driven, and full of small thoughtful details.
I just purchased the next book and am eager to read.
