Historia
They each had their reasons for being a soldier. They each had their illusions. Goodrich came from Harvard. Snake got the tattoo - Death Before Dishonor - before he got the uniform. And Hodges was haunted by the ghosts of family heroes. They were three young men from different worlds plunged into a white-hot, murderous realm of jungle warfare as it was fought by one Marine platoon in the An Hoa Basin, 1969. They had no way of knowing what awaited them. Nothing could have prepared them for the madness to come. And in the heat and horror of battle they took on new identities, took on each other, and were each reborn in fields of fire....

*spoilers* amazing story, great voice acting, a few slip ups
Revisado: 09-12-23
I first read fields of fire as a senior in high school, and it was a huge part of my decision to become a Marine- I felt very connected to one of the three main characters, Snake.
I’ve been out the Corps for over a decade, the gwot is behind me- but the fall of Kabul anniversary had me thinking about Vietnam, and I was pleased to find out that audible carried it.
The voice acting is great, but man oh man it’s so hard to ignore things like the mispronunciation of ‘corpsman’ (core-man, not cors, corpse, etc.,) for example
While that sort of thing definitely pulls you out of the immersion, it’s still an absolutely amazing political essay expressed through a heart wrenching story. Some parts read far more uncomfortably than they did at 17. The ways Snakes moms behaves. Hodges basically forcing himself on Mitsko. The wounding and death of Marines, of the local population. Chickenshit staff ncos, careerist officers. The use of racial epithets- must’ve been an intense time in the Corps. During my time I just never came across that type of trash, no one cared I was brown cause we were all green. Disheartening to remember how wrapped up that was in the war, on top of everything else.
My own war, OEF, wasn’t much like Vietnam. I spent a lot of time on trucks, standing in a turret. Boredom. Decent food. What they went through, both in country and back home, must’ve just been terrible.
That James Webb was able to express his own experiences and the personalities of what I assume some of his Marines were like. The last chapter is almost jarring in how it seems it must’ve been for him, a wounded veteran in a very “f americ-“ time, which was a new concept (I think) in a college atmosphere.
It’s a tale expressed through the eyes of 3 characters, all white: Snake, a corporal, the squad leader, a tough kid from the hood with nothing but the Corps, like so many of us. Robert Hodges, a good old boy from the south- the platoon commander who enlists because of the family legacy. Goodrich- the spoiled rich kid from Harvard (who ultimately is the antagonist of the story, at least as much as the VC). A real cool difference of perspectives- so unlike one another it’s amazing that they came out of his head.

Historia
Political disintegration is a persistent feature of world history. The Collapse of Complex Societies, though written by an archaeologist, will therefore strike a chord throughout the social sciences. Any explanation of societal collapse carries lessons not just for the study of ancient societies, but for the members of all such societies in both the present and future. Dr. Tainter describes nearly two dozen cases of collapse and reviews more than 2,000 years of explanations.

A phenomenal way to become familiar with societal collapses
Revisado: 04-16-23
An engaging read/listen- probably one of the better audiobooks for material that can sometimes be a little dry.
This book is a phenomenal way to become familiar with collapse, what it is, when it’s happened, and why it has. Arguably a bit heavier on the gray matter than something similar like ‘Collapse’ by Jared Diamond
I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this to anyone

Good delivery from the perspective of a Latino dealing with the reality that while we’ve fought for all this nations wars, worked in every state, and helped make leaps in science, art, and what it means to be an American that we are still X-Americans first.
If you’ve seen the stand up special there’s no reason to buy this- almost a word for word copy, which isn’t bad just worth noting

Historia
April 16th, the year is 1963. Birmingham, Alabama, has had a spring of nonviolent protests known as the Birmingham Campaign, seeking to draw attention to the segregation against Blacks by the city government and downtown retailers. The organizers longed to create a nonviolent tension so severe that the powers that be would be forced to address the rampant racism head on. Recently arrested was Martin Luther King, Jr.... It is there in that jail cell that he writes this letter; on the margins of a newspaper he pens this defense of nonviolence against segregation.

A (very) brief introduction to the warrior ethos
Revisado: 01-22-23
Like all of Pressfields self help work, it’s historically based with lovely and motivational stories. I read this book as a young Marine about a decade ago and found myself enjoying it now.
Is it a book about how to be a good warrior? Not really, it’s primarily about the internal guidance system we all have, and how it can be trained to make us better

Historia
In one of the most compelling combat narratives ever written, Staff Sergeant David Bellavia, an Army infantry platoon leader in Iraq, gives a teeth-rattling, first-hand account of 11 straight days of heavy house-to-house fighting during the climactic second battle of Fallujah. His actions in the firefight, which included killing five insurgents in hand-to-hand combat, earned Bellavia the Bronze Star, the Silver Star, and New York state's highest military honor, the Conspicuous Service Cross.

Historia
The Everglades was America's last frontier, a wild country long after the West was won. In this book Michael Grunwald chronicles how a series of visionaries tried to drain and "reclaim" it and how Mother Nature refused to bend to their will; in the most harrowing tale, a 1928 hurricane drowned 2,500 people in the Everglades. But the Army Corps of Engineers finally tamed the beast with levees and canals, converting half the Everglades into sprawling suburbs and sugar plantations.

I love this book, and it’s an amazing audiobook. One of the first Florida history books about the environment I’d ever read, it covers all the sunshine state issues from the colonization to now. The natives, the politics of the modern era, the initial attempts to dredge the Everglades to now- a phenomenal read well worth the investment for the audiobook

Immortalized as the Band of Brothers, they suffered huge casualties while liberating Europe in an unparalleled record of bravery under fire. Dick Winters led them through the Battle of the Bulge, the attack on Foy, where Easy Company reached its breaking point, and finally into Germany, by which time each member had been wounded. Outside Munich, they liberated an S.S. death camp and captured Berchtesgaden, Hitler's alpine retreat.

Historia
Five months after being deployed to Iraq, Lima Company's 1st Platoon became one of the first American forces to enter Fallujah, where they encountered some of the most intense hand-to-hand combat since World War II. Civilians were used as human shields or as bait to lure soldiers into buildings rigged with explosives; suicide bombers approached from every corner hoping to die and take Americans with them; radical insurgents, high on adrenaline, fought to the death.
