Historia
Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

Beautifully written and moving

It’s all the things a novel should be.
It’s sad, but compelling. I loved the husband-wife relationship and the satisfying ending. The narrator does a great job and the author’s note is not to be missed.

Fabulous!
Revisado: 02-04-23
I’m hard to please with books. Most of the time I take issue with something or feel like one or more of the characters didn’t read real or right, somehow… but I’m happy to say that this was a lovely read. I am thoroughly charmed by the characters of Tom and Maggie and all the secondary characters were good, too. I laughed and cried and am sad to come to the end.
This is a lot like Wednesday Wars or Have You Seen Louis Valez, but with more charm (and Britishness).
It also has the library, book themed stuff and family angst of The Library of Lost and Found, but again with MUCH more charm and cohesion to the story.
This is definitely my favorite “book themed” read so far this year. I’m putting Ms Osborne in my list of authors to read more of in future.

In 1606, the grand city of Prague hides an ugly secret: the emperor’s bastard son, Don Julius, is afflicted with a madness that pushes the prince to unspeakable depravity. Banished to a remote corner of Bohemia, Don Julius comes under the care of a bloodletter who works to purge the vicious humors coursing through the young royal’s veins. Couldn't get past the first few chapters.

Seems like it is written to titillate and appeal to the basest appetites. I was disgusted with almost every character. I finally decided I'd had enough. This one is for the trash bin.
