Historia
After almost 20 years, Emery Hazard finally has the man he loves. But things with his boyfriend and fellow detective, John-Henry Somerset, are never easy, and they’ve been more complicated lately for two reasons: Somers’s ex-wife and daughter. No matter what Hazard does, he can’t seem to get away from the most important women in his boyfriend’s life. While Hazard struggles with his new reality (changing dirty diapers, just to start), a bizarre murder offers a distraction.

Gregory Ashe’s excellent writing continues to give me inspiration and fear I’ll never be a good writer
Revisado: 04-12-24
Love the story, sad that the arc where the two of them working together is at its end, but I understand that I’m sure Ashe wants the characters to get into her things, otherwise the books might end up being formulaic after awhile, sort of like a television series with the no real plot line, and that would be tragic. What makes me so jealous is his ability to weave their strong connection together with compelling, twisting cases, and then land such descriptive beautiful descriptions of dust motes and sunlight… I’m surprised he isn’t more popular. I’m sure it’s because Hazard and Somerset are men, so people think this book isn’t for them. This is, like all his H/S books I’ve listened to, about two people in love. What couldn’t be simpler and yet so complex? I’m eager to get into Hazard as a PI.

It was hard for me to get past the narrator issues
Revisado: 02-20-23
He sounded like he was rushing through the narration of Tristan sometimes, as if he was bored of him. I think I understand what he was trying to convey, a sort of easy breezy sort of fellow but instead the the cadence at points seemed to convey a "who cares about life" instead. Plus one must look past the Insta-love, and the pace of their relationship, which was highly unrealistic. Their are reasons gay men are stereotyped as promiscuous and lesbians as insta-nesters, they behaved like stereotypical lesbians, on steroids. So that was definitely suspend one's severe disbelief.

Disregard reviewer who said there is oodles of sex
Revisado: 01-20-23
There are loads of scenes in the beginning of hardening and arousal but all they do is hold hands without gloves *gasp*, and kiss passionately in a garden before the do eventually get to a sex scene.
A small trigger warning, there is talk of dv in the past and a brief incident of it again, but it's relatively small.
On that note; I found that, the brief incident of dv, and the whole "trip to the Continent", to keep my review a no spoilers, a bit unrealistic. It's just a little too fanciful for my tastes, but of course that will depend on the reader. I also found it a bit odd the world they inhabit, the gossiping mamas and pistol waving papas for some lads like Marcus and others who seem to be treated more like "regular" men, like Allistair, even if it is waved away as because of previous circumstances. It just made it far too easy to then have them fall in very traditional male and female roles. I haven't listened to previous books from this author so perhaps this is typical of this world, but thought I note that I found it odd. They jus don't feel like two men, but rather a "feminine" male with a "masculine" male and that was disappointing as I'd rather have two gay men. I know gay is a modern term and notion but it's different than this. Also I really heavily disliked the little feature of the Vicountess, I think that's her title, it just felt really patronizing, like "oh whew, NOW they are ok because some older woman giggled and approved of them", rather than a family member or something more pertinent to the plot line. And yes I am a woman. Some will like this, it just didn't quite click with me. The narrator is lovely though so that helps heaps.

Needs heavy editing and all equally close to mics
Revisado: 01-17-23
The volume needed to heavily edited and wasn't. It's so frustrating when some of the speakers are softer and some are very loud. Do not laugh directly into the mic, do speak directly into the mic. The begining was better than the end, clearer, not as much over talking. Also too much rambling. I believe heavy editing would have helped a great deal. Also links to data they are referring to would be great.

Warlock Nate Hawthorne just wants a cup of coffee. Is that too much to ask? Apparently. Because instead of precious caffeine, all he gets is cursed by a pack of werewolves who want to use him for his magic. Now the only way to fix the damage is a mate bond to a grumpy and oh-so-sexy alpha in the rival pack, who happens to hate him. This is so not how he wanted to start his day.

not so for the writing. I listened for the sex scenes and to hear what happened. It was poorly written, too many f-bombs. Also too many sneaky comments even when there was a serious matter. I am returning this ASAP.

A really compelling podcast, very bingeable, and although I understand the ending I really wished it had turned out different, but perhaps that showed how much I loved the characters.

Beautiful prose, if it was about anything else I'd listen again and again. But it's about pedophilia, suicide, suffering, guilt, almost none of the contents are happy. so sadly I had to find myself in the right mood to tolerate the blast of sadness and despair coming from these pages. But still there are moments, slivers of happiness.

Made me laugh out loud many times
Revisado: 01-11-21
Overall loved the book. Sam is a tiny bit annoyingly overbearing. He clearly was one of those kids that gets away with everything even though he’s naughty because he doesn’t mean for things to happen and is “good” but he’s still an appealing character nonetheless. There are both “Airplane” and “Princess Bride” style humor, a slew of gay or pan/bi characters, and an asexual character, which is refreshing. I love Gary the gay hornless unicorn especially and that his breath, his poop is all magical and glitter flys off him if he is angry but it doesn’t really explain why that’s how a unicorn’s magic
manifests but no one else’s.
There are a few stereotypical unpleasant behaviors of Sam’s paramour, Ryan. 1) he’s overbearing of a lover when Sam is more than capable of taking care of himself several times saying that Sam will not “go here”, “do that” even though he hasn’t known Sam that long and isn’t his parent, boss, or mentor. 2) he is patronizing to Sam saying he is cute when he is angry 3) Even though they aren’t together nor ever have been he’s jealous when he thinks Sam has had sex with someone else even though he is engaged and had sex with Justin, which seems pretty hypocritical.

A favorite of mine
Revisado: 10-05-20
Love this series. Treats BDSM really well which is unusual, meaning that it’s enjoyed not suffered through. In fact as this series isn’t included in audible plus I will probably buy them as I repeatedly listen to them.
Having said that there are some definite flaws/one has to suspend one’s disbelief about. Character development could be stronger esp. when Vincent acts very controlling and abusive; 100% historical accuracy isn’t high on the list esp. about sex workers; also a man not recognizing a lifelong friend is strange regardless of the following: a few days beard; darkness; a faked accent; he’s deep in the closet and can’t imagine a childhood friend being gay; and the last and perhaps most difficult.
As long as readers can get over the above you’ll really enjoy this series.

Not as good as the first but pretty good
Revisado: 08-09-20
There was some parts which were clearly edits, a word replaced or intonation of the narrator changed, which seems rather careless— I could understand one or two but I’m fairly certain it was at least 5 times.
Also, the first parts skittered dangerously close to coerced rape or assault, narrowly avoids it as Merick is of course sexually aroused but people can be sexually aroused and still assaulted or even raped so the author isn’t off the hook, especially with the pheromones and other drugging it could be seen as coercion under the influence, which is even worse as Merick didn’t have a choice. I believe it would have been better if Merick had been wanted the sex so bad he initiated rather than just accepting it. Also if a person really want something it doesn’t matter that their opponent is much larger, many a woman has fought tooth and nail with an attacker even though the person was much larger to the bitter end, sometimes through trickery or through distraction, there was a scene. Where he gave in too easily just because he was overpowered. I did like how it was addressed that straight men wouldn’t enjoy sex with a man without the pheromones etc but the writer never addressed how a female could dose a male Dianeh (sorry I don’t know how it’s spelled), or if there aren’t any female mentors or what, but that’s not a big deal.
I thought the narrator did a good job with the kid’s voice, it is very hard for some male narrators to manage kids voices without them being annoying but it worked for me, although his high pitched voice might be annoying to others. Other all it was nice to have another book in this world but with totally different characters and I enjoyed it.
