As a third-generation immigrant, with my paternal grandparents arriving in Port Natal as indentured sugar cane cutters, this book offered a perspective on their lives, as well as my father's, that I had never considered before. It stirred up so many emotions, particularly anger. I found myself reflecting on how we are all created equal, yet the color of our skin dictates our experiences and treatment in life. Despite this anger, I also felt a deep sense of pride in how far we’ve come. Congratulations to Joanne Joseph for writing this powerful story for us!

A story of “how you can love unconditionally”

Regardless of where you were born, where you were schooled, the menial jobs some hold or the highly professional ones, as humans we need unconditional love and support to become the best versions of ourselves. I loved every chapter of this book for the authenticity of the story and the characters.

Childhood scars with beginnings and no ends

Connected deeply with Amu’s journey. When raised within a small tight-knit community, a woman has to navigate life according to societal expectations. I shed tears for the twins stolen childhood. As a parent our worse fears rise up in this book.This book highlights the injustices that befalls one based on the colour of our skin and the culture we are born into.
This books makes you ask what if the clock could rewind and another decision taken ?
Affirmation that we all tackle any situation with the best we know how in that specific moment in our life and point of reference.

Story of “breaking the cycle”

I was totally immersed in this story! The author has eloquently portrayed the realities of women forced into prostitution and the cycle that follows.
This story is an eye opener to the social dilemmas that face women born into poverty. It is also a story of hope and finding pure love!

Love the golden thread of how love and careers maketh a woman. A career with a purpose is what we all strive for and sometimes calls for great sacrifices. This story made me remember and affirm my purpose.

Enthralling read. Cultural Immersion

I could not stop listening. The characters, the journey and the golden thread of hope in every chapter wrapped me completely. I was immersed and most times felt like I could smell the frangipani and lavender oil. I was so immersed.
Made me think about the plight of women, wealthy or not, educated or not, we rise to overcome and find true joy. We keep the pulse going . Thank you Alkr Joshi. Excellent narration Sneha Mathan.
