One of the best narrations I've ever heard!

But sometimes, the main character got on my nerves, and was too unnecessarily harsh. There were a few chapters where i just didn't like her. My faith in her was restored, later.

Good but not great

Wish They Had Played More Music

I recently listened to Mariah Carey's biography with her music. That book was wonderful! This narrator has a very loud high-pitched, tenor speaking voice. On top of speaking very loudly, he also shouts words at odd times, and it's very off-putting. You have to turn hiTm down, then turn up everyone ELSE, but since he keeps making noise while they're speaking, you have to keep the volume relatively low. And then, while the music is playing, he's talking over it, so you only get a snippet of the music before he moves on. Furthermore, Stevie's music was not just for us, as black people. He wanted the WORLD to get along, so his music was for EVERYONE. There's nothing wrong with including Black culture. We learn about Latin music, reggae, indian, Arabic music and more, but this narrator seemed to exclude certain fans, which is unfortunate.

Oprah was HILARIOUS in this book! She also has a depth of performance of which I didn't know she was capable. She single-handedly made me like her as a PERSON. Great book!

Thinly-disguised Therapy Book as a Romantic Mystery

First, I'll say that I DID enjoy the book, but you're most definitely getting therapy sessions and history lessons throughout the book. For me, all the dialogue between the main characters slowed everything down. Then, around chapter 20, things started happening. I've discovered that in books with action, tense, or scary situations, it bothers me when a female narrator has a high-pitched voice. They always sound too loud and carefree to me, and I find myself saying, "Shh shh shh!!" so that the bad people don't hear, as she gives away their position. At times, I found Amelia irritating, but that doesn't take away from the fact that this was a good book... even funny. Loved the male narrator!

This book was a nice, short, light-hearted change from the non-stop thrillers I was listening to. The man is a better narrator for this book, having more range than the female. It's unfortunate that all of her male characters sounded like Marge Simpson's twin sisters.

My favorite narrators were Stephen Fry and Richard Armitage. This new person for me, James Laily, has moved to number one. OUTSTANDING! I do want to mention, however, that the main character, Maggie, got on my nerves for three quarters of the book.
