Big plot twists, distracting narrator
Revisado: 03-09-24
This book starts off fairly straight forward...a fairy tale story of a local girl who becomes Miss America without trying. Then...the story takes several turns. The narrator really distracted me. I think she had a cold when she was recording this. I was able to make it work by picturing Miss Coco Peru reading this to me as she took her Sudafed.

Historia
For a small-town girl with big-city dreams, there is no address more glamorous than New York's Barbizon Hotel. Laura, a patrician beauty from Smith, arrives to work at Mademoiselle for the summer. Her hopelessly romantic roommate, Dolly, comes from a working-class upstate town to attend secretarial school. Vivian, a brash British bombshell with a disregard for the hotel's rules, rounds out the trio of friends.

Three Girls in the Big City
Revisado: 02-15-24
This book is a lot of fun. If you enjoyed Valley of Dolls, Sex and the City, or any story of female friends making their way through life in the Big City, you will enjoy this read. The characters are fun, the story takes some unexpected turns, and the setting is fantastic. The author does a good job of putting you in 50's New York. I found myself looking forward to my commute so that I could hear more of the story.
The narrator was good too. I enjoyed her accents and the clear voice she gave each of the characters.

A rushed ending to a great series.
Revisado: 11-21-23
I have loved all of the books in this series. I liked this one, I didn't love it. For a final entry, I wanted to see more interaction between the characters I have grown to love, but they were all separated for the majority of the book. I felt like the author just wanted to be done with the story line, as the ending came quickly, and without much reward. That said, if you have read the other books, you know you are going to read this one, just to see how it comes out.

Historia
It is the story of 11-year-old Pecola Breedlove--a black girl in an America whose love for its blond, blue-eyed children can devastate all others--who prays for her eyes to turn blue: so that she will be beautiful, so that people will look at her, so that her world will be different. This is the story of the nightmare at the heart of her yearning and the tragedy of its fulfillment.

It was just too depressing for me
Revisado: 11-21-23
This book is just a little bit too real. I really wanted the characters to catch a break, but the world was so cruel. It is a dose of medicine...very bitter medicine. I felt sad and hopeless at the end.

This book jumps between the present and the past, with a light touch of Encanto-style magical realism. I found the chapters that took place in the Dominican Republic most of all. I was sorry to see the story end.

Alexander Grant is a little too good at a few too many things. Two dozen martial arts. Twice that many languages. Chess, the piano, sports, forging excused absences, you name it. He graduated high school top of his class 17 times. Of course, no one knows any of this. Not that he wants to go unnoticed. It’s just safer that way.

To Be Fair...I'm not the target audience
Revisado: 11-23-19
My rating and review are for the over 40 crowd. This book is targeted at teens. I have enjoyed Harry Potter and the Hunger Games, so I thought I would give this a try...but it skews too young. It does a nice job of bringing history lessons into the plot, so it will sneak some lessons in to those who might be tested on history sometime soon, but for me, it moved too slowly, and I didn't care for the whole Forest Gump plot trick of having one character having first-hand knowledge of all of the major historical figures in time.
I also couldn't really imagine that anyone over 1,000 years old would really still behave like a teenager. That took me out of the story a lot. However, for anyone in their teens, this might be a great book for you.

Historia
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

I'm still shocked at how much I enjoyed this
Revisado: 09-28-18
I bought this because of the excellent ratings. It turned out to be an incredible guilty pleasure. I feel like the book was written with a man from the south who loves guns, god and country. I'm from California, and I don't even really like holding sharp knives. I can't really put my finger on why I enjoyed hearing this story about a womanizing jerk who stumbles into situations that far exceed his expertise. But I did like it. And I liked it so much that I bought the sequel as soon as the first book was done. It might not be for everyone. I would have thought it wasn't for me. But here I am giving it a five-star review.

Historia
Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.

I loved the Hate U Give
Revisado: 09-27-18
I really enjoy a book with well-crafted characters. This book brought teenagers and adults to life equally well. I did not grow up in the inner city, nor did I go to a private school, but the author created window into these worlds that was accessible and entertaining. The plot is driven by a senseless murder. This tragedy carries through the book, but the ability of the narrator to summon the strength to strive to create awareness and change is inspiring. The book is not preachy, and it manages humor throughout. The kids felt real, and I felt that I knew them, and was proud of them for their dedication to what is right.

A very pleasant listen
Revisado: 09-27-18
First of all, hats off to Ari Fliakos. His narration was fantastic. The book was also good. While I was able to see some of the smaller twists coming, some of the more major plot twists caught me completely by surprise. This false sense of security I had in thinking I knew what was coming made the twists all the more enjoyable.
