This was an enjoyable listen, although it took some time for me to have an idea what is going on, and to see the characters unfold. The beginning seemed rather disjointed to me. But then the characters start acting rather than reacting. By the ending I was all in.

The performance was good; almost to the level of Ray Porter's narrations.

Now I want to start the next.

I am a long time reader of the Dresden files, and this stands out as one of the best paced books in the series. But along with the previous three novels, it is changing

The final episode of a fantasy series that sometimes felt like a soap opera. Not always, but at several points through the march.

It was rewarding to finally see Lawrence move beyond his insufferable sense of duty. At least mostly. The finale gives closure for most of the story lines, but leaves enough ambiguity to make one wonder what comes next. (Not a request for any more volumes!)

The narrator also had moments where it was almost annoying to listen to.

I like the author's later works more than these, but they made for a good listen when walking the dog or driving.

After this many volumes, I am feeling committed to finish.

This book has a little more going for it than the previous two. There is actually a story here and the overall plot line is again progressing. Lawrence's stuffy honor, British reserve, and unjustified allegiance to King and Country is slightly diminished, making him a bit more interesting as a character, while Temeraire continues to provide interest as a foil to Lawrence's reluctance.

Spoiler: the reunion with the dragons of Africa is a plot twist that is both interesting and unexpected.

This had been on my radar for quite some time; the buzz had caught my attention. Now that I have finished, I wonder why.

The story (or stories) seem disjointed. There are multiple timelines going concurrently and I had difficulty maintaining a coherent mental picture. The computer game as a narrative mechanism seemed quite clunky and artificial.

The secret organization was quite James Bondian, and therefore not realistic to me. I had a hard time feeling a threat.

At the end, I am hard pressed to figure out if it is Science Fiction story, or a description of the cultural revolution's failures, crimes, and results.

This 3rd part of the series is the best of the series. I got a little bit bored during the second book. I set it aside for a few weeks before returning and finishing. But book three kept my attention and I found myself looking for additional opportunities to listen.

As a character, I found Koli to be often very frustrating, but then I had to remember what I had been like at 15 or 16 years old. To me, much of his character rings true. Even when it is frustrating.

The story weaves it's way through several lines and multiple points of view. The characters develop and are slowly evolving. I especially liked the evolution of Rampart Fire (Katrin).

The ending had enough twists that I did not know what was coming before I got there.

All in all a great story and much more satisfying than 'The Girl With All The Gifts'.

I was a little concerned when I saw that Ray Porter was not the voice of this story, but Pabon came through and is the voice of Hector.

The tale is solid Clines, with just a little bit of noir thrown in for extra seasoning. The characters were engaging and mostly likable. The pacing is good and kept me wanting to hear more. The horror had enough yuck factor, and there was an unexpected twist at the end.

The only element that gave me pause was the amount of pain and injury that Hector pushed on through. I have had traumatic injuries, and one does not throw a patch and a splint and keep on pushing through.

But other than that, we have a great book here.

This book does not really go anywhere. The tedium of the journey across the desert is made manifest in the story's slow dragging progress. There is no real resolution or even much to add to the series plot arc.
And Laurence's unyielding devotion to King and country at his own expense is moving from noble commitment to pointless stupidity. He refuses let go of the idea of duty.
I have liked most of the series, and hope that the next book is better.

I have read the author before, and have really enjoyed her stories. This ine took a long time to get going. There is a back-story and character development that take about a third of of the book to get moving.

It was worth it.

Be persistent and stay the course and you will be rewarded.
