Historia
How did the Wendels, one of New York’s most famous Gilded Age families, disappear from history? The Wendels built a fortune from New York real estate, and rubbed shoulders with the Astors, Vanderbilts, and Stuyvesants. But as the 19th century came to an end, the Wendel family tore itself apart. Following six years of painstaking archival research, Claire Prentice has prised open the door of the Wendels’ Fifth Avenue mansion—dubbed “the house of mystery” by the press—to reveal a fascinating and dysfunctional family imprisoned in a gilded cage.

Fascinating and enjoyable!
Revisado: 06-22-23
This book is incredibly well written, including historical information gathered from many sources, including the Wendel family’s own documentation. I hope some pick up the movie rights to this, or even a “series” to run. So many personalities, good and bad. I’ve seen many books and movies based in this time era that focuses on the ultra rich of that time, Vanderbilts, Astors, Carnegies etc. I’d never heard a whisper of the Wendels!

Historia
Robert and Doris Angleton seemed to have the perfect life. Until she was coldly murdered in her own home, shot 13 times in the head, chest, and abdomen.... Suddenly, the ideal husband seemed anything but perfect: He was jailed, accused of hiring his older brother, Roger, to kill his wife for money - possibly as much as $2 million. However, without the crucial eyewitness testimony of Roger - who soon committed suicide in a Houston jail cell - the case against Robert rested entirely on circumstantial evidence. But the facts raise more questions than answers....

Well written, but tedious
Revisado: 05-25-23
I enjoyed the book and the narrator did an excellent job. While I enjoyed the book, I am disappointed in the outcome of the story.

Historia
Inside a beautiful house in Philadelphia's ritzy Main Line section lay the body of a young mother - dead of an apparent drowning in her bathtub. With no sign of a break-in, no history of marital problems, and the naïve belief that these things sometimes just happen, Stefanie Rabinowitz's family prepared to bury the 29-year-old wife and mother. But at the 11th hour, because Stefanie was so young, and because there were no witnesses to her death, an autopsy was ordered. And what it revealed was unthinkable: Stefanie had been murdered.

Historia
Pretty, smart, and pampered, Audrey Marie Hilley grew up in a small Alabama town believing she was entitled to the best of everything. But marriage to her high school sweetheart, a cushy secretarial job, and motherhood were not enough to satisfy Marie, and she soon began to act out in troubling ways. Only when her husband, Frank, became sick with a mysterious illness, did it seem that she was ready to put someone else's needs ahead of her own. The truth was far more disturbing.

Well told

Very detailed with value added background information. I feel for the family and friends whose lives were impacted by this sociopath.

Historia
When Nancy Cooper moved from Canada to Cary, North Carolina, with her new husband Brad, their future was bright. Living in one of the most picturesque towns in the United States, the couple mingled with neighbors, attended parties, and raised two daughters. Interesting
Revisado: 05-14-23
Is somewhat one sided presentation, painting the wife as a perfect person and the husband as a rat. However, even with this prejudice apparent in the writing, I do believe there’s some truth to it. I just think Nancy’s own flaws could have been shared too. Her flaws were mild compared to his. Obviously. Brad is not a likable person at all.
