Historia
Jen Lancaster is here to take a hard look at our elevating anxieties, and with self-deprecating wit and levelheaded wisdom, she charts a path out of the quagmire that keeps us frightened of the future and ashamed of our imperfectly perfect human lives. Take a deep breath, and her advice, and you just might get through a holiday dinner without wanting to disown your uncle.

White woman privilege: The book
Revisado: 03-21-21
Author opens with a rant about how a fear of getting "canceled" on social media, avocado toast, and vegans who talk too much about being vegan. Add in some snarky comments about how people are "afraid" of eating peanut butter, and you have pretty much every boomers in the Christmas rant about Millennials condensed into one book. Some of the tips for managing anxiety might be helpful, but the toxic attitude of the author taints it, and the spoiled tone seeps through enough to be more exhausting than helpful.

Historia
Whether listeners are devout believers or distant seekers, The Idolatry of God shows that we must lay down our certainties and honestly admit our doubts to identify with Jesus. Rollins purposely upsets fundamentalist certainty in order to open listeners up to a more loving, active manifestation of Christ’s love. In contrast to the usual understanding of the "Good News" as a message offering satisfaction and certainty, Rollins argues for a radical and shattering alternative. He explores how the Good News actually involves embracing the idea that we can’t be whole, that life is difficult, and that we are in the dark.

Powerful and challenging
Revisado: 12-10-17
Fascinating! Probably one of the most powerful books I have read this year. Rollins calls into question some of our most committed assumptions and summons us to a next step in the growth process of wrestling with the very idea of God and what it means to pursue understanding

Historia
Be inspired by saints like never before in My Life with the Saints by James Martin, SJ. This best-selling memoir of spiritual self-discovery is an homage to the saints who have accompanied Fr. Martin throughout his life. From a lukewarm childhood Catholicism, to the Wharton School of Business, to the executive fast track at General Electric, to the Jesuits, to a media career in Manhattan, Martin has relied on the saints to intervene in and guide his life.

Will expand your reading list
Revisado: 03-21-17
An excellent overview of the life of various saints and why they matter. Written as a personal memoir, but also highly relatable. I find myself adding several full biographies to my reading list based on these intriguing overviews

Historia
The Ivy City is dying. It flails under a sea of the risen dead, the holy churches broken, the nobles largely destroyed, the population leaderless and alone, the city itself is bleeding and growing cold. Tattered crimson ribbons of blood fill the gutters. A despicable wizard, scion of the noble line, has shoved the Ivy City to the brink of death as he seeks what he sees as his rightful throne. Doomed by his forbidden love, discarded by the crown, forgotten by the people, a disgraced hero rises from the ashes to combat the rising darkness.

Dorse brings a voice and tone perfect for the tale
Revisado: 06-01-14
What made the experience of listening to The Last Dragoon the most enjoyable?
A fantasy work by Ross, Dragoon takes a common theme of classic high fantasy and turns it on it's head. The sepulcheric voice of Dorse as the Dragoon often pulls you through a story which leaves you both quickened by the excitement, and yet heartbroken by the sense of loss experienced by the character. A conclusion that demonstrates more than just a need for raw power of destruction to win the day, "Last Dragoon" is a cut above your average fantasy, and brings a storytelling tone that will stand the test for many readings.
