Helpful and Engaging with lots of Practical Advice
Revisado: 02-12-25
I have been listening to a lot of self-help books lately, and this one has a sincerity that is refreshing. The author is someone who has struggled to overcome retroactive jealousy, and in the process of trying to heal themself has discovered a lot of helpful material. In particular, I had not heard of EFT tapping and will be checking this out. Meditation is another therapy recommendation made, something I have long heard people sing the praises of but have never tried myself. So that is two items for the to-do list. I don't want to summarize what the book takes five hours to lay out. Instead, I think you will find the writing to be polished and easy to listen to. There are encouraging examples included to provide inspiration, and a number of practical strategies to choose from. In a nutshell, it is a character building process that will help you break free from this condition. And that is no quick fix, but the EFT tapping is supposed to help somehow, so I am curious.

Skillfully Written with Useful Insights
Revisado: 12-09-24
I had never heard of somatic therapy or anything else labeled somatic before listening to this book. Now I finally know what's going on in the world where people are spending so much time paying attention to the little things around them. They take time to notice smells, sounds, and tensions existing in their bodies that they had been oblivious to. Honestly, it took me quite a while to fully figure out what somatic therapy meant. While I listened and learned, I found the author to be talented at providing figures of speech to humorously explain the nuanced practice she spoke of. You could tell she was fully invested in the field and knew her stuff.

Sanity For Scatterbrains

Now, I'm not saying I have ADHD, but I still found this book helpful. So, what does that tell you? I guess it means that we all have some dysfunction in our lives and could use a bit of advice. This audiobook is full of things to try. I love consuming words on tape, as it used to be called. I listened to this one while at the gym. I had to relisten later to take notes. Her words about perfectionism hit home especially. And I have always procrastinated. Maybe now I won't so much if I apply some of these ideas. I am hopeful.

This book introduces many ideas that help, most of which are ones I would not have thought of myself. I like how the book begins by helping you recognize your anger style. After that, what follows are chapters that focus on things like triggers, communication, modeling appropriate behavior, and discipline, to name a few, What I took away from all this advice is this: if I can build a healthy relationship with my child based on love and compassion, then the anger problems will be minimized. Oh, and breathing. I gotta incorporate that one, too. Honestly, I get the feeling that this author could keep going with the insights. You really need to press the stop button a lot to take note of all the ideas.

An Exercise Workout for your Thoughts
Revisado: 07-23-24
This book reminds me a little bit of a jelly donut. It has a sweet-tasting exterior, but when it comes to a jelly donut, I like the middle part best. So here's what I mean by this analogy: don't be fooled into thinking that the first parts you listen to, the ones labeled About this Book, Free Resources, and Introduction (with many definitions and chapter outlines) are any indication of what is really inside. They are simply there to organize and prepare the way for the really good stuff. And for me, it's all about the real-life examples and the key insights. I need to hear real-life situations before I understand and can relate and say, "That's helpful. I'm gonna do that from now on." And that's what I found. As far as key insights go, I particularly appreciate finding out the difference between guilt and shame because I think this can help me not to fall prey to some destructive thoughts. Much appreciated.

The next best thing to seeing a therapist
Revisado: 05-17-24
This book is as close as I am gonna get to having a therapist. I will have to do all the work, but the basics are here for me to begin do-it-myself therapy sessions. The explanations are clear, and there are ample strategies to employ. I have not journaled in years, but she makes a good case for restarting, and I like some of her writing prompt suggestions. I might even try meditating just to see what thoughts bubble up. Thanks for the thoughtful book.
