Fun story with magic in our world
Revisado: 04-22-25
The narrator was terrible at men's voices, enough that it was distracting and annoying. Otherwise she was pretty good, except I'm not sure I heard any decent Welsh accents.

Historia
Many years ago, Claire was named Head Librarian of the Unwritten Wing - a neutral space in Hell where all the stories unfinished by their authors reside. Her job consists mainly of repairing and organizing books, but also of keeping an eye on restless stories that risk materializing as characters and escaping the library. When a Hero escapes from his book and goes in search of his author, Claire must track and capture him with the help of former muse and current assistant Brevity and nervous demon courier Leto.

Almost a great book!
Revisado: 11-21-24
I really liked the inventions of the afterlife and all its "messiness" when it came to the many varying beliefs of both humanity and the supernatural beings. At times, though, the adventure part felt a little too Alice-in-Wonderlandish: one interesting place after another but with the feel of "look how cool this is!" Unlike with most books I listen to, with this one I found it difficult to visualize a lot of the story and locations. I mostly liked the characters, though Leto got annoying in his constant vacillation between young teen and older-almost-a-man teen. In the end, though, the book felt kind of unfinished. Not in a cliffhanger kind of way. More due to a lack of depth or gravity. I think more backstory would have fixed that. I needed to know how Claire died and ended up in Hell's library, and how the library itself ended up in Hell, a story Claire mentioned but never followed up on. We learned how Leto died, but he wasn't the primary character, so his story wasn't enough to tie it all together. The result was a book that felt more like a middle chapter than the start of a series, to me, anyway. Oh, and as an aside: It's kind of funny that the library books are called "unwritten." They're written, just not finished! But I suppose "unfinished characters" and "unfinished books" just don't have as good a ring to them.

Great story, world, and characters.

The male narrator is terrible at women's voices. I realize he is reading a first-person character's voice, but it was still annoying to have trouble realizing when he switched from the Bard's voice to Tia's or, for that matter, any other character's voice.

Historia
It was supposed to be a simple bank robbery. Quick. Clean. Efficient. It was none of those. With police searching for them across the state, a band of criminals hide out in a desolate cabin on the frozen shore of Lake Shadow. Isolated, shrouded in thick forest, and haunted by a mysterious history, they thought it was the perfect place to hide. Tensions mount as they hear strange noises outside. Slain animals are found in the snow. Before long, they realize something is watching them. Something hungry, violent, and not of this world.

Worth a listen but wish it was better.
Revisado: 10-08-20
Don't get me wrong. I listened to the whole book, and enjoyed it, as I would an episode of some TV crime drama or SiFi Channel horror schlock. On the plus side he took a many times done premise and plotted it well enough to overcome any "been there, read that" nonsense. Furthermore the action scenes were well done, the suspense pretty well handled and ending a surprise.
Given these positives I was a bit disappointed when it didn't deliver more. The potential was there. The characters in particular had the could have made it a much better book. I wanted to care about them. But despite intriguing outlines they were for the most part not developed and painted in broad stereo typical strokes. And those stereo-types were jarring in places (how many times can the female lead scream and back away?)
Am I being too harsh? Perhaps. If so it's because the writer has real potential and the book didn't live up to my expectations. I will however try other writing by him to see how he develops.

Worth your time to listen if you like a good thriller. Almost goes off the rails a couple of times piling on the obstacles the characters are faced with but veers back on track just in time. Characters better fleshed out than in many disaster yarns. Check it out.

Historia
Serge and Coleman are back on the road, ready to hit the next stop on their list of obscure and wacky points of interest in the Sunshine State. This time, Serge’s interest is drawn to one of the largest retirement villages in the world - also known as the site of an infamous sex scandal between a retiree and her younger beau. What starts out as an innocent quest to observe elders in their natural habitats, sample the local cuisine, and scope out a condo to live out the rest of their golden years soon becomes a Robin Hood-like crusade to recover the funds of swindled residents.
