“You like it darker? Fine, so do I,” writes Stephen King in the afterword to this magnificent new collection of twelve stories that delve into the darker part of life—both metaphorical and literal. King has, for half a century, been a master of the form, and these stories, about fate, mortality, luck, and the folds in reality where anything can happen, are as rich and riveting as his novels, both weighty in theme and a huge pleasure to digest.

Loved the collection
Revisado: 11-20-24
Loved the collection of nervousness and anxiety riddled stories mixed with sadness and a bit of “wtf”.
This isn’t “horror” by any means. But it’s a great collection of stories with great narrations. It was nice to hear Stephen king do one himself

Historia
On the night of 14/15 April 1912, a supposedly unsinkable ship, the largest and most luxurious vessel in the world at the time, collided with an iceberg and sank on her maiden voyage. Of the 2,208 people on board, only 712 were saved. The rest either drowned or froze to death. How could this 'unsinkable' vessel sink and why did so few of those aboard survive? The authors bring the tragedy to life, telling the story of the ship's design, construction, and maiden voyage.

I have this in its physical form as well. On a sea of glass is an amazing collaboration by historians who have spent years putting together the most concise and well organized work on the story of Titanic.

Historia
A few minutes before midnight on April 14, 1912, the "unsinkable" RMS Titanic, on her maiden voyage to New York, struck an iceberg. Less than three hours later she lay at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. While the world has remained fascinated by the tragedy, the most amazing drama of those fateful hours was not played out aboard the doomed liner. It took place on the decks of two other ships, one 58 miles distant from the sinking Titanic, the other barely 10 miles away.

Excellent retelling of lesser-known side of the titanic disaster

Loved this book as it told far more of the other side of the story from the vantage point of captains rostron and lord. It wasn’t the same story we have heard over and over.

Historia
At the dawn of the 20th century, when human flight was still considered an impossibility, Germany’s Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin vied with the Wright Brothers to build the world’s first successful flying machine. As the Wrights labored to invent the airplane, Zeppelin fathered the remarkable airship, sparking a bitter rivalry between the two types of aircraft and their innovators that would last for decades, in the quest to control one of humanity’s most inspiring achievements. And it was the airship—not the airplane—that led the way.

Great narration uneven storytelling
Revisado: 03-17-22
I greatly enjoyed the book, however I felt that the Juan trippe content was almost bolted on as an afterthought. The content is definitely 3-4 zeppelin over trippe. I feel the author could have benefitted by either increasing the portion on trippe or having two books entirely with one each dedicated to zeppelin and trippe.
Regardless great book and a great listen

Historia
Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

Fair....but seemed rushed
Revisado: 01-27-22
I admittedly struggle with suspension of disbelief and this book tested that. I never really felt a connection with the main character and i just got the vibes of the terrible horrible no good very bad day. This is one of the rare instances where i feel a book needed to be LONGER in initial character development as well as exploration of the "lives"
Narration was excellent.

Fascinating, beautifully narrated, but a bit rambling.
Revisado: 12-11-21
This book did not diss appoint. Plus having the beautiful dulcet tones of Barack Obama read his own memoir was…priceless.
I found it enthralling, surprisingly blunt, and more than once did it make me emotional.
My only real criticism is that sometimes the stories went on a rambling direction. I feel more topics could have been covered if a little bit of details that, forgive me, just didn’t add much to the story anyways, had been omitted.
I can’t wait for the next volume covering his second term.

Half-hidden by forest and overshadowed by threatening peaks, Le Sommet has always been a sinister place. An imposing, isolated getaway spot high up in the Swiss Alps is the last place Elin Warner wants to be. But Elin's taken time off from her job as a detective, so when her estranged brother, Isaac, and his fiancée, Laure, invite her to celebrate their engagement at the hotel, Elin really has no reason not to accept.

Yawn …..Reese Witherspoon and I clearly do not have the same taste in “thrillers”
Revisado: 11-15-21
The narration was just fine. No issues.
The story however. My god. It could have been handled in less than 1/3 of time and even then I don’t think I would have cared. Situations that are entirely …nonsensical….family dynamics that make no sense. Whiny boyfriends who I was begging for the murderer to go after….
Oddly enough I didn’t hate the protagonist. Just everyone around her.

Historia
When people discuss deadly maritime disasters during the second decade of the 20th century in which more than 800 people were killed, they're often talking about the Titanic or Lusitania, not the Eastland on the Chicago River. However, shockingly enough, on July 24, 1915, a ship full of sightseers out for a day on the Great Lakes capsized while still tied to a dock, sending more than 2,500 passengers into the frigid water.

Pretty disappointing
Revisado: 10-14-21
It’s basically just a repeat of first hand accounts which is interesting sure, but so little about the ship itself. The narrator sounds like they just learned about human words. Very sterile.

Historia
On May 29, 1914, after a collision in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the Empress of Ireland sank in minutes, taking 1,012 passengers and crew to their deaths. The disaster shocked the world but then was forgotten with the torpedoing of the Lusitania and the engulfing cataclysm of World War I. Now, in Dark Descent, acclaimed author and diver Kevin McMurray revives the story of this forgotten maritime catastrophe.

Revisado: 07-12-21
The first sentence says titanic has 3300 on board. Titanic only carried 2227 total. If you can’t get something so commonly known accurate, not going to waste my time.
