Historia
Joe works at a facility that performs human experimentation. His work just followed him home. The government wanted to unlock hidden abilities in the human mind. They put subjects in extreme sensory deprivation. All the test subjects went violently insane. But the research continued. Today it has been perfected. Almost perfected.

Terrible narration
Revisado: 07-31-24
I’m on chapter 18 of 34 and I just can’t continue to listen. I really don’t care for the narrator but I have tolerated him before in other books. This time, bad narration and bad writing have conspired to make this book intolerable. The writer has no sense of pacing or authentic human reactions. It feels rushed. So much so that I just don’t buy any of it. He’s the kind of writer that writes a sentence to tell you something instead of writing a chapter to show you something. The book is in full swing with characters at their wits end after about 24 hours into the action when it should have taken days or weeks to arrive at that conclusion. It’s just so bad. Life is too short to keep listening to this. I don’t recommend.

Not terrible
Revisado: 06-12-24
So this serial killer story was ok. It kept my attention and I listened to the whole thing. The ending was not great. It was just thoroughly middle of the road. The narrator spoke so slow I actually had to increase the speed to make it sound normal and I’ve never had to do that before. So… just ok.

Historia
There's a saying in Barstow, California, a decaying city in the scorching Mojave desert . . . The Interstate here only goes in one direction: Away. But it's the only place where ex-LAPD detective Beth McDade, after a staggering fall from grace, could get another badge . . . and a shot at redemption. Over a century ago, and just a few miles further into the bleak landscape, a desperate stranger ended up in Calico, a struggling mining town, also hoping for a second chance.

Enjoyable and interesting but with some flaws
Revisado: 03-12-24
I do like a good sci-fi mystery. This story kept me interested. I mostly enjoyed it. I didn’t quite like the detective who struck me as annoyingly cliche but I tried to over look that. I would buy this book again but only if it was on sale which is how I got it.

Disappointing
Revisado: 03-06-24
I had high hopes for this book having liked the Harry Hole movie, The Snowman. While the narration was quite good, the rest wasn’t. It dragged on quite a bit and never really demanded my attention. I won’t continue with this series.

Solid Scarpetta
Revisado: 01-31-24
This entry in the series was an improvement over the previous one. Dr Scarpetta redeemed herself and I actually didn’t find Lucy to be as annoying and insufferable as she has been in previous books. The narrator is fantastic. One of the best I’ve heard. I recommend this for anyone continuing the series but I wouldn’t start the series here. Enjoy!

Historia
It’s the mid-'90s. Grunge and flannel are fading as the Spice Girls and Hot Topic conquer the malls. Cherry gloss glistens on the lips of the youth. Modems hiss as America comes online. And in a fog-drenched cove at the edge of New England, something terrible awakens when a fisherman reels in a gruesome catch: the remains of a young woman. Remains still pulsing with furious life.

Mehhh
Revisado: 10-13-23
If you’re fairly new to horror then you might like this one. Atmospheric and creepy, made even more so by the skilled narrator, it’s not bad. The problem for me is I’ve read this story many times before, done far better than this. I didn’t dislike it but I’ve spent more than 30 years reading predominantly horror and so this little tale pales by comparison to the better authors who have taken on this familiar horror trope. So…. It’s ok? Yeah. It’s ok.

Good stuff
Revisado: 09-02-23
Even after all these decades, I still enjoy Dean Koontz, which I can’t say about all the authors I’ve been reading for more than 30 years. Or more accurately, USED to read. So glad he is standing the test of time. I enjoyed Nameless and look forward to reading more. This kept my interest throughout. Some of the stories felt like they could actually have been expanded into full length books. Highly recommended!

Still loving this series
Revisado: 08-29-23
I have been reading Pendergast for decades. Out of order and rather randomly. I thought at first that I wasn’t going to like this one and honestly the last quarter of the book wasn’t my favorite thing ever but the scene at the end, no spoilers, made it all worth it. Very recommended for all Pendergast lovers.

Historia
Alex Armstrong has changed everything about herself—her name, her appearance, her backstory. She’s no longer the terrified teenager a rapt audience saw on television, emerging in handcuffs from the quiet suburban home the night her family was massacred. That girl, Alexandra Quinlan, nicknamed Empty Eyes, was accused of the killings, fought to clear her name, and later took the stand during her highly publicized defamation lawsuit that captured the attention of the nation. It’s been ten years since, and Alex hasn’t stopped searching for answers about the night her family was killed.

Disappointing
Revisado: 08-17-23
I can’t get over how poorly thought out this story was, the plot holes, character behaviors and decisions that make absolutely no sense at all and are never explained. The main character is weak and pitiful. If you require things to be logical and makes sense, this book will likely disappoint you too. I recommend skipping this one!

Historia
An online video of a girl clawing at the ceiling of her own grave could be the worst thing FBI forensic psychologist Zoe Bentley has ever seen. Perhaps even more disturbing is the implication of the video’s title: “Experiment Number One.” Zoe and her partner, Special Agent Tatum Gray, work as fast as they can to find the monster behind the shocking video, but soon another one shows up online, and another girl turns up dead.

Surprisingly good
Revisado: 06-22-23
I’m not honestly sure how this ended up in my library. I must have had a lapse in memory because I rated part one of this series with 1 star across the board. Everything about this second installment was much improved. It feels like the author quit trying quite so hard and this is more of a natural effort. Even the narration by the same narrator was good. I can’t explain it, don’t know what made the difference but I liked this one. The main character was more likable. The partner was more reasonable. The mystery was interesting and the narrator did a great job of voicing an 80 year old man. Recommended!
