Susie Chan is an icon of endurance running. Excellent and relatable.
Revisado: 12-29-24
Susie is an amazing athlete, yet she writes in such a way that is so relatable. It makes you feel as though you could lace up your shoes and do amazing things all your own. It makes her so inspirational. Truly an excellent book. Funny, insightful, occasionally heart breaking, but always entertaining. This book is a must for anyone who feels there’s something inside themselves that needs only a spark to be fully realized. This book will be that spark for many a reader.

Historia
Welcome to the Barkley Marathons, a fever dream of an ultra event, inspired by a prison break, heralded by a conch blast, paid for in cigarettes and socks, and completed only by a select few. A race in which competitors haul themselves up mountains, through extreme weather conditions, beyond pain and exhaustion, mile after mile. Completed 60 miles? That’s just the fun run. In the Spell of the Barkley is a story of sporting obsession, exploring what drives individuals to challenge themselves at the limits of what is possible – and what it takes to succeed.

Historia
Aside from her rock star looks, Catra Corbett is a standout in the running world on her accomplishments alone. And, unbelievably, she's also a former meth addict. After two years of addiction, Catra is busted while selling, and a night in jail is enough to set her straight. She gives up drugs and moves back home with her mother, abandoning her friends, her boyfriend, and the lifestyle that she came to depend on. Her only clean friend pushes her to train for a 10K with him, and surprisingly, she likes it and decides to run her first marathon after that.

A truly inspiring story of healing through finding a passion. Catra is such a unique voice and’s I found much of what she has to say difficult to listen to. Often because it made me confront some of my own demons that chase me in my runs. The cause of many of her pains may be different from the readers, but the pain itself is all too familiar. It’s inspiring to hear from a tough as nails person who refuses to be defined by pain, and instead finds a way to use it as fuel for the positive. A great read. Highly recommended.

Since childhood, Bao has been intrigued by the fox gods, yet they’ve remained tantalizingly out of reach—until, perhaps, now.

Revisado: 04-16-24
The narrative flow of the novel moves effortlessly. It never lulls or sags, seemingly knowing exactly how long the reader cares to linger on each topic. The characters feel alive and the time spent in their company is thrilling. I highly recommend this novel.

Séamas O’Reilly’s mother died when he was five, leaving him, his ten (!) brothers and sisters, and their beloved father in their sprawling bungalow in rural Derry. It was the 1990s; the Troubles were a background rumble, but Séamas was more preoccupied with dinosaurs, Star Wars, and the actual location of heaven than the political climate.

Stick with it
Revisado: 02-09-22
It took me a while to get into this story, though to be honest that probably has more to do with me rather than the book. I went into it mostly blind beyond the fact that it was a detective story and so I was initially caught off guard by the unique way the author frames it. As it progresses though and the narrator finds his rhythm it gets better and better. There are several laugh out loud moments and it should keep you at least chuckling through out. I look forward to the next one.

A solid follow up to the Ruin
Revisado: 07-19-20
The novel is well written and masterfully performed. It lays enough clues that you can beat Cormac to some discoveries, only to have the rug pulled out from under you. I can’t wait for Dervla’s next mystery.

Historia
In June 1876, on a desolate hill above a winding river called "the Little Bighorn", George Armstrong Custer and all 210 men under his direct command were annihilated by almost 2,000 Sioux and Cheyenne. The news of this devastating loss caused a public uproar, and those in positions of power promptly began to point fingers in order to avoid responsibility.

Historia
In the romantic narrative of the Old West, two larger-than-life characters emerged as the perfect foils for each other - the rampant outlaw and the heroic peace officer. Without the villain, sheriffs would not have needed to uphold the law; and without the sheriff, villains would have had no law to break. Together, both personalities fought, lost, and triumphed amid shootouts, train robberies, and bank holdups against the backdrop of the lawless American frontier.

Uneven narration, odd editing
Revisado: 06-11-18
When the book begins our narrator seemed to have been reading the book for the first time, the inflection of certain words and phrases is odd and distracting though no where near as distracting as the editing of swear words. I’m unsure whether this is a fault of the manuscript that was being read or a personal choice of the narrator, but it was extremely distracting and frustrating to listen to.
Overall it’s mostly enjoyable, though I would not listen to it again.
