Powerful, dark sequel that stands on its own

Great book, well read.

I loved the series and think the books were well read. My only issue was how it was edited. Each new chapter starts in a very jarring way. The last chapter ends with a soothing voice and the next chapter is immediately introduced, with no space, and in a new gruff voice. It is continually like getting kicked in the groin.

This has been a very enjoyable series, so far. I am enjoying the diverse readers and how their voices match the different narratives. The story kept me very engaged. Can't wait till the next book.

Enjoyed it, not perfect.

I enjoyed the story and the narrator, generally, but I had a few gripes. Sometimes, the main character could be a bit whiney (both in the writing and reading). Very few of the main characters had much depth to them. For example, I felt like I knew nothing more about the main character's closest friend than that she was strong and loyal. Also, the portrayal of men vs. women was pretty black and white. Overall, it is an entertaining listen.

Good except for the ending

Unexpectedly interesting

This book was a gift and not what I usually read, but I enjoyed it. I could relate in a lot of ways with the main character, being the son of a Jamaican dad who grew up in Miami. I didn't have nearly as much drama in my life, but it is that drama that makes for interesting reading. I do wish we got a little more closure to some of the stories, however.

I really enjoyed the journey Mathis took me own here. She did a great job fleshing out this world and story. I binged book 3 and can't wait for the next book to come out to find out what happens next. I also thought it was well narrated.
