It’s a grind, but a GOOD one.

I really, really want the second book now. This story definitely not for those who are weak-stomached, nor is it really for those who are new to the genre.

It’s got a great balance of description, action, and dialogue. Interesting characters, intricate world building, and overall great composition. I’m very attached to these little gutter snipes clawing their way up through hell.

As for my gripes—sometimes the story is a bit of a grind, especially on the monster evolution bits. A large part of that is because it’s an audio medium instead of a visual/book. It’s hard to process the blue screen sometimes. HOWEVER, it pays off. Genuinely, the evolution bits come to fruition in the plot. I love love love the emotional dynamics, the character development, plot pacing, and the grotesque, overwhelming horror.

It’s also genuinely a pleasure to listen to this performance. Dude’s voice is 11/10. Smoking hot. Big thumbs up from me, and hope to god Mr. Reader comes back for the second one.

Personally, it scratched an unexpected itch. I want only the best for these little monsters! I’m going to go read the next one on Royal Road, since the audiobook isn’t out. I can’t wait to see where this abomination goes!

I really enjoyed this performance! The narration was easy to follow for the most part and the only complaint I have is how piecemeal he says “ichor”, but that’s my own preference. Overall, a great listen!

As for the story itself, I feel that this is something for those who truly enjoy YA science fiction and fantasy smashed together. Lots of juicy world building, interesting—if a little expected—theological structure, and a relatable, if somewhat too mature, 16-year-old lead. I can tell you I did not expect the ending, although I can say the signs were there. I guessed much of the climaxes, just not necessarily how we would get there, but I’ve been a writer for a long time, and have read much of this genre.

It was fun! And I look forward to the next installation. Mostly because I wonder where our author intends to go after such a climatic ending. Lots of bows tied, so it’ll be fun to see which loose strings get plucked, or what bows get untied!
