Historia
The world is burning, and Corinne will do anything to put out the flames. After her brother died aboard an oil boat on the Mississippi River in 2013, Corrine awakened to the realities of climate change and its perpetrators. Now, a year later, she finds herself trapped in a lonely cycle of mourning both her brother and the very planet she stands on. She's convinced that in order to save her future, she has to make sure that her brother's life meant something. But in the act of honoring her brother's spirit, she resurrects family ghosts she knows little about--ghosts her grandmother Cora knows intimately.

I couldn't stop listening. It was a powerful read, one that brought me to tears a few times thinking about my own family. In this novel, she raises so many issues in a way that is both raw and a testament to the art of storytelling 🙏🏾. Will recommend to my friends and colleagues.

Like medicine...
Revisado: 06-17-23
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, the author's performance and the story felt like medicine to my soul. At times it was emotionally challenging for me as a black woman revisiting the past and present trauma Dungy conveyed. I too garden, I too am a mother, I too have faith in changing times for the better. Feeling seen and valued was a promising takeaway from SOIL. Thank you ✨

Historia
In 1927, Zora Neale Hurston went to Plateau, Alabama, just outside Mobile, to interview 86-year-old Cudjo Lewis. Of the millions of men, women, and children transported from Africa to America as slaves, Cudjo was then the only person alive to tell the story of this integral part of the nation's history. Hurston was there to record Cudjo's firsthand account of the raid that led to his capture and bondage 50 years after the Atlantic slave trade was outlawed in the United States. In 1931, Hurston returned to Plateau, the African-centric community three miles from Mobile.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The authors voice, and the ease at which behavioral concepts are expressed make it both easy to digest and insightful.
