I enjoyed this book as a child, but I enjoyed it even more as an adult.

This was more of a love letter to the author’s beloved, late dog rather than an exposé of what goes on inside dogs’ brains. I was expecting the latter, so I was a bit disappointed. It was still a sweet book, though.

I’ve read a lot of books on dog training over the years, but this is the most informative, approachable, and relevant one I’ve encountered.

I finished this book and was left feeling icky. The author comes across as narcissistic, manipulative, judgmental, disdainful of others, full of himself, lacking in true empathy, and machiavellian. He seems to view most people as objects you can “get” something out of. His examples usually end in how tricking people could earn you favors or free stuff from them. He tries to hide it, but it really seems like he values these tangibles more than genuine human connection. That said, I believe we have something to learn from every human on this planet, and that includes Chase. He’s a respected expert in the field. He did make me aware of subtle body language cues I had not previously considered meaningful. He also clued me into ways people may be trying to manipulate me. I will be better prepared for such discussions in the future, now that I know this is how some people operate. Overall, I didn’t enjoy the book, but I guess it’s better to know there are people like this out there, so I’m glad I read it, I guess?
