too much "woe is me, I'm an unloved unhappy unlucky small being with nothing in the world" start. like really leaning into it. laying it on thick. couldn't make it past chapter 1. and the narrator sounds whiny and petulant.

I feel like the story had a ton of promise and upside and intrigue, but the writing felt clunky at times (using the wrong word for something, or throwing in am analogy that didn't really add anything to the story/dialogue). Narrators were solid, but the female would sometimes sound very whiny and nasally, something I didn't think the heroine was - mostly. That did get a bit muddled here and there. This badass woman who would relapse into helpless mouse??
The male narrator was also solid, though his version of female also sounded whiny...
and the narrators would pronounce names/places differently - the biggest glaring issue being the primary villain's name. HIS NAME. They were each pronouncing it differently. very annoying.

because I hate leaving things unfinished I listened fully and will end up listening to book 2, but the narration annoys me. Strange affection only when she's performing a female character that makes it sound like she's trying to be Jennifer Coolidge but comes off nasal or muffled underwater. and her male characters are inconsistent. the main male/potential love interest comes off super soft and slow and lazy sounding.... but the story doesn't make it seem like he should sound that way?? just gonna get the physical book for the follow up I think ...

the narration could have used some improvement but overall credit and fun! Definitely for a younger audience, but it took me back to my Goosebumps childhood.

actually really enjoyed this collection! going to have to find the rest of them somewhere... several familiar themes but doesn't really play into the "dumb damsel" one. I appreciate that.

Great voice acting, really great story telling... I am ALL IN on this writer and narrator! Came upon this genre in a sale and hot damn am I glad I started with this series.

Narration is difficult

I want to enjoy the story but the narration is hard to get through. I'm barely in ch 2 and I have to stop. I appreciate a fair chance to anyone and everyone buti believe this narrator does not speak English as a first language so pronunciation is off, inflection is difficult and it even sounds like she skips words sometimes. she has a strange cadence as well that keeps pulling me out of the story. A bit upsetting. Maybe I can find it at the library and read myself.
