Gets a bit dry occasionally but otherwise good
Revisado: 07-29-24
That's a "me" issue, but occasionally zoning out due to non-stop amounts, names and years. But interesting insights and narrated well.

Good for the most part, but a few clichés were annoying
Revisado: 06-27-24
Writers really love the Hollywood type clichés where there's a timer and on the last second or in this case even on the last milliseconds something is achieved - please get over it already. It doesn't have to be milliseconds to feel like a close call.
Occasionally felt like I've picked up a book that's meant for teenagers. Especially at the romantic parts.
Overall it's quite okay. Narration is very good.

It's the I-Ching of conflict, the contemporary companion to Sun Tzu's The Art of War, and is abundantly illustrated with examples from history, including the folly and genius of everyone from Napoleon to Margaret Thatcher, Hannibal to Ulysses S. Not as good as Greene's other books
Revisado: 04-05-24
Unlike Greene's other books, my mind constantly wandered off. Might just be me, so take this review with a grain of salt.
Narration is good quality. The stories and facts on a par with his other works.

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

What's with all the hype??
Revisado: 10-04-23
I fell victim to the amount of positive reviews, hype and audible constantly showing the title to me - I should have skipped this one.
I can't help but wonder if majority of the excellent reviews are from the same group of people who enjoy watching endless uneventful drama series, that run for decades. Just to kill time and not having to think of anything. Because that's exactly what this book is - endless, slow burn drama and essentially nothing surprising happening. It's literally just a story about a teenage boy who lives in the poor neighborhood and poverty. Very lifelike in that sense, but I just don't get it why people like it. For comparison, "The Long Walk" by Stephen King - talks about JUST WALKING from the start of the book until the end - and it's way more engaging and interesting. Make of it what you will.
However I must give credit to how it's written and how it's narrated. Both are very well done. It's just that the story is so dull.

Historia
The world is never finished catching up with Vaclav Smil. In his latest and perhaps most digestible book, Invention and Innovation, the prolific author—a favorite of Bill Gates—pens an insightful and fact-filled jaunt through the history of human invention. Impatient with the hype that so often accompanies innovation, Smil offers in this book a clear-eyed corrective to the overpromises that accompany everything from new cures for diseases to AI.

Title says the most of it.
Not one of his best books, but pretty high up there. Interesting topics with a lot of interesting insights. Good memory refresher of what have been the big words and the similarities between them.
Definitely worth the monwy/credit.

Historia
Enrico Fermi is unquestionably among the greats of the world's physicists, the most famous Italian scientist since Galileo. Called "the Pope" by his peers, he was regarded as infallible in his instincts and research. His discoveries changed our world; they led to weapons of mass destruction and conversely to life-saving medical interventions. This unassuming man struggled with issues relevant today, such as the threat of nuclear annihilation and the relationship of science to politics.

Historia
This is the strange and fascinating life of Erwin Rommel, from his days as a youth in Imperial Germany - when he had a child out of wedlock with an early girlfriend - through his lauded military exploits during World War I to his death by suicide during World War II, after he attempted a failed coup against Hitler. Rommel was a man of contradictions: a soldier who wrote a best-selling book about World War I, a commander who went from commanding Hitler's bodyguard to trying to kill him, and a serious military mind who was known for participating in practical jokes.

I hadn't heard anything about him and I am glad I have now.
I had to pause, relisten, pause again and double check in written form to confirm that I heard some of the "number of prisoners taken" correctly.
Awesome story about an awesome strategist.
Narration is good and clear as well.
Definitely recommend.

Lacking in audio, but the story is quite good
Revisado: 05-04-23
Cons:
- Audio cuts randomly. Annoying but doesn't seem to lose much (if any) sentences.
- Narrator has the annoying habit (that a lot of people do) to essentially whisper in all places where people are yelling. So the part where people speak are louder and clearer than the parts where they are supposedly yelling. And the louder they yell, the quieter he narrates/whispers it. You can do actual yelling, but put the microphone further away. Might be just me, but that was quite annoying.
Pros:
- Story is unique and quite captivating.
- The author has captured and forwarded the dullness and the "lasting forever" feeling very well.
- You easily get immersed in the story as if you're part of it. Walking along with them.
Overall:
If you're looking for some creepy story or a full-on action, then this is not it. It's completely different to other Kings books in my opinion, but a good one at that. I've been disappointed in about 3-4 of his books and was recommended this one to rebuild my trust. It kind of worked.

Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

Too childish for my taste
Revisado: 03-27-23
Maybe I missed the notes, but for my taste it was just a kids tale. "Alice in Wonderland. Part 2" with a bit of added action and gore.
It's not that the story was awful, but it just did not engage me. It was "eh" after the first few hours. I had 5h left and I wasn't even sure i wanted to finish, because I didn't really care how it ends.
I think part of the childishness comes from the narration. Now, I know that it is super hard to narrate fantasy characters without being childish. There's a very thin line. So I think this story could've used digitally altered voices if needed, for it to sound better/scary/authentic.
You won't be wasting your money per se, but there are a lot better books from the author.

Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

A lot of the reviews here are unjust I think
Revisado: 02-22-23
The narration is great. Not a single thing that bothered me. Diction, sound, echo - everything was good.
The story - I absolutely agree that the story was not nearly as good as Project Hail Mary, but it was still good! I think a lot of the reviews here are taking that one as a baseline and judging this book accordingly - but that's a bit unfair. Artemis is a good book. It's just that Hail Mary is a *crazy good* book! But you can't set the highest performing one as the threshold.
In some spots I found it being rushed or jumping over great spots to elaborate a story or make it more interesting by including more science, etc. But it didn't really ruin the story.
If you look for an interesting space thriller - sure go for it! If you expect it to be as good as Hail Mary or better - it's not, but nor do I know of any to recommend.
