Historia
Meredith and Nina Whitson are as different as sisters can be. One stayed at home to raise her children and manage the family apple orchard; the other followed a dream and traveled the world to become a famous photojournalist. But when their beloved father falls ill, Meredith and Nina find themselves together again, standing alongside their cold, disapproving mother, Anya, who even now, offers no comfort to her daughters.

My favorite KH!
Revisado: 01-28-25
For the first half of the book, I couldn’t stand either of the main characters. If that’s the case for you, keep listening! I’ve read or listened to about 2/3 of this author’s books, and this is my favorite. Very gut-wrenching, but great historical detail.

Brilliant!
Revisado: 01-24-25
The skill it takes to write a story like this is much greater than is first apparent. It would be very tempting to moralize, for example. But the writer deftly anthropomorphizes her characters without overthinking it. Very unique premise, written and performed well.

Historia
In the first line of Ocean State, we learn that a high school student was murdered, and we find out who did it. The story that unfolds from there with incredible momentum is thus one of the buildup to and fallout from the murder, told through the alternating perspectives of the four women at its heart. The murderer Angel, her mother Carol, and the victim Birdy, all come alive on the page as they converge in a climax both tragic and inevitable. Watching over it all is the retrospective testimony of Angel’s younger sister, Marie.

Very dispassionate, considering the subject matter. And while the narrator has a good voice, she lost me st the mispronunciation of “Formica.”

I live in the area that was fictionalized in this book series, and have to say how much I enjoy when a writer gets the setting so right. Great narrator. Story kept me guessing!

Perfect narration. Unique relationship between the two protagonists. Plenty of action. I binged it over a weekend, and would recommend it to even those who don’t normally go in for post-apocalyptic or action novels.

So poorly written
Revisado: 12-26-24
I have listened to several Agatha Raisin books that are free through the end of the year. I kept thinking that they had to get better, based on the good reviews, but… nope. Amateurish writing, and a completely unlikable protagonist who isn’t likable in the least.
If “Murder She Wrote” is impressive to you, you’ll love it.

Historia
"Marley was dead to begin with...." These chillingly familiar words begin the classic Christmas tale of remorse and redemption in A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. Now R. William Bennett rewinds the story and focuses the spotlight on Scrooge’s miserly business partner, Jacob T. Marley, who was allowed to return as a ghost to warn Scrooge away from his ill-fated path. Why was Marley allowed to return? And why hadn’t he been given the same chance as Ebenezer Scrooge? Or had he?

Atmospheric and gothic

This is an odd story — very slow, and not typical of most mysteries. If you are looking for something in which the setting itself could be described as a character, though, this is a near perfect example of that.

On 1st of December, renowned puzzle setter, loner, and Christmas curmudgeon Edie O'Sullivan finds a hand-delivered present on her doorstep. Unwrapping it, she finds a jigsaw box and, inside, six jigsaw pieces. When fitted together, the pieces show part of a crime scene—blood-spattered black and white tiles and part of an outlined body. Included in the parcel is a message: 'Four, maybe more, people will be dead by midnight on Christmas Eve, unless you can put all the pieces together and stop me.' It's signed Rest In Pieces.

Revisado: 12-13-24
This book combines all my favorite things. Nested stories, interwoven narrative, locked-room, cozy, set at the holidays, British… I didn’t do the clues at the end of the chapters, but I found the concept and execution to be great, and I hope she writes 20 more! Great narration too.
