Loved it… except for body shaming

This is the first book in the whole series where there was noticeable body shaming. One character loses weight and a big deal is made about her now suddenly being attractive, one child is repeatedly shamed for eating and possibly becoming “fat”, and another is very physically fit and shames lots of folks for physical weakness (understandable for the character) BUT also shames a woman for her being lucky she’s got a half-elf metabolism otherwise she’d be even bigger.

Super strange, and only stood out because it was across three characters in one book in a series where physical differences HAD been celebrated… and because the weight= value type of shaming specifically was all geared towards women/girls.

Still a great book, but a sad change from what I used to consider a fairly remarkable series for celebrating differences in people.

I’ve been listening to each remake with Simon Vance and it’s been a truly exceptional experience. I’m so excited for the release of the sequel later this year! Thank you for spacing out the Vance recordings as the anticipation has been part of the journey as I revisit these fantastic characters after relistening to the Black Prism series.

I’m so grateful for this new recording with Simon Vance! I’m a huge Weeks fan and just relistened to the Lightbringer series and was inspired to come back to the Night Angel series as well, but was hesitant remembering the reader. This choice to record again with the wonderful Simon Vance is much appreciated! Excited for the February 2023 drop of the next book.

The narration is fantastic! I usually shy away from multi narration audiobooks, but this cast is excellent, and the set up of one perspective per chapter is helpful. I'm excited to listen to more by Philippa Gregory.

Brent Weeks has created amazing world complexity while still remaining human and emotionally relatable for listeners. Broad spectrum (pun intended) of ages and talents and intentions from characters and Simon Vance's portrayal. This is smart, beautiful, and entertaining.

If you enjoy art, history, strong female leads, politics, museums, or heck just a good audiobook this is well worth the credit. This is my first audiobook with this narrator and she brings a range and subtlety creating a beautiful world, not just to listen to, but to visualize. An audiobook about an expert painter and researcher of historical art might be difficult to bring to life, but I found myself picturing the colors, imagining the tiny cracks of age, feeling the brusqueness of a wealthy collector until I was immersed in a world where I wish I could visit the main character later in her journey. Even if this piece is out of your normal wheelhouse consider giving it a listen... you might be surprised. I'll be on the prowl for more from both the author and the narrator as they brought beauty into my life unexpectedly.

I purchased the Audiobook version of Schooled in Magic Book 2 yesterday and finished today! The narrator has found an ease and comfort with the various voices and perceptions of internal thought versus conversations that left hours passing without my realizing. By the time I noticed I was in hour four I decided to hang on and enjoy the ride. While I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in the series there were times I felt the narrator (or perhaps the director?) leaned towards a type of teen angst that did not do the writing justice. Our lead character, Emily, clearly has some darkness in her past on Earth alluded to in both the first and second installation. My hesitation in listening wholeheartedly in Book 1 came from a disconnect with some of that darkness, in particular in regards to her stepfather, her abused and alcoholic mother, and Emily's own past contemplations of suicide. This second book feels more respectful to Emily's past and gives the listener more variety in her teenage emotions as she deals with growing up, Magic, friendship, power, potential suitors, and political maneuverings in a new world while using her existing knowledge of Earth's own history. One gets the sense while listening that the author has a deep appreciation of History and enjoys Emily's musings and considerations of her existing knowledge of monarchies and empires as she considers her new world dealing with chauvinism, classism, ageism, and continuous life and death situations. Based on listening to the first two books I can confidently recommend the audible versions to adult and teen listeners alike. There are great battles, intellectual problems to solve, intrigue and lots more for you to discover, Dear Listener. I'm looking forward to listening to Book 3!
