I highly recommend this book to anyone who has grown up in a multicultural background or a first generation family. It speaks so much truth to what each of the characters are experiencing and what the expectations are. This was a very soulful story.

As the fact checker for a popular magazine, Gabby DiMarco believes in absolute, verifiable Truths—until they throw the facts of her own life into question. The genealogy test she took as research for an article has yielded a baffling result: Gabby has a sister—one who’s been desperately trying to find her. Except, as Gabby’s beloved parents would confirm if they were still alive, that’s impossible.

Such an interesting and possible concept. The characters and scenario were believable. I enjoyed the references to the lesser known side of Puerto Rico.

Historia
In Rosario, Argentina, Camila Hassan lives a double life. At home, she is a careful daughter, living within her mother’s narrow expectations, in her rising-soccer-star brother’s shadow, and under the abusive rule of her short-tempered father. On the field, she is La Furia, a powerhouse of skill and talent. When her team qualifies for the South American tournament, Camila gets the chance to see just how far those talents can take her. In her wildest dreams, she’d get an athletic scholarship to a North American university.

LOVED IT!
Revisado: 12-07-24
I loved the characters and the storyline. I also felt I had a bird’s eye view into a different Hispanic culture. La Furia was a powerful girl on so many fronts- a true pioneer and a role model to other salmon trying to swim upstream.

Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

I absolutely loved the Dutch House! Tom Hanks was a wonderful narrator! Anne Patchett’s attention to details and her ability to sew the ends together left me wanting to share some aspect of the story and book with many.

Historia
There is something very special about Agnès Morel. A quiet presence in the small French town of Chartres, she can be found cleaning the famed medieval cathedral each morning and doing odd jobs for the townspeople. No one knows where she came from or why. Not Abbé Paul, who discovered her one morning 20 years ago, sleeping on the north porch, and not Alain Fleury, the irreverent young restorer who works alongside her each day - and whose attention she catches with her tawny eyes and elusive manner. She has transformed each of their lives in her own subtle way, yet no one suspects the dark secret Agnès is hiding.

I hate to give up a book without finishing and I’m glad to have persevered though I was frustrated through half of it as it jumped around more than others.
Loved how it was all tied up on the end.

Historia
Like most gentiles in Nazi-occupied Paris, architect Lucien Bernard has little empathy for the Jews. So when a wealthy industrialist offers him a large sum of money to devise secret hiding places for Jews, Lucien struggles with the choice of risking his life for a cause he doesn't really believe in. Ultimately he can't resist the challenge and begins designing expertly concealed hiding spaces - behind a painting, within a column, or inside a drainpipe - detecting possibilities invisible to the average eye. But when one of his clever hiding spaces fails and the immense suffering of Jews becomes incredibly personal, he can no longer deny reality.

Loved the book and characters!
Revisado: 09-07-20
About 3/4 of the way through the book, I began to notice the narrator’s German accent persist through his French accent despite the character change. Most people probably wouldn’t be bothered by it, but has a polyglot who speaks all 3 languages, I found it distracting. That being said, I DO sympathize with the narrator who I’m sure was growing weary from changing characters and accents to match. Not an easy task! Thoroughly enjoyed the story.

Having grown up on I Love Lucy reruns, I always felt a sense of sadness about the ending of this on and off TV couple. I remember waiting on Lucy at the Grand Central Oyster Bar Saloon in the late 1980s. She was filing a movie that didn’t get a lot of press in the end. She played a homeless woman in NYC when homelessness and a growing concern over HIV Aids were both very prevalent. Lucy was a tough old broad. She was surprisingly tall and surrounded by pals who adored her. I remember feeling a sense of awe and curiosity and yet an overwhelming sense of sadness eminated from her. I had NO IDEA how successful they were nor how much life had toyed with them both. “A Book” is a raw confession of a historic figure of lineage and his gratitude for an unexpected life of chance meetings and true love.

Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening, her husband, Gabriel, returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face and then never speaks another word. Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety.

Overall, I enjoyed the story and found it was well- performed. Sometimes the number of characters and their details were overwhelming which made it confusing and difficult to separate.
