Although.
I love the characters and the setting, some of the forced tension was just painful.

Even a great narrator can't save a mediocre book

I really wanted to like this book more.

The basic premise of the book and the classic nerd nostalgia was fun and I was really excited to see where that would lead. Sadly, the final stop on this trip was disappointment.

I can get past the protagonist having his own quirks. There is always a balancing act between making the central character likeable without going full blown Mary Sue.

I can get past the problems with the premise to a point, although the willing suspension of disbelief continues to be harder and harder to stomach by the half way point.

I could even forgive the poor writing of every culture other than America, the poor writing of anything other than male, and the mediocre writing of anything other than straight.

What I couldn't get past is the fact that with all of those weaknesses, the author leaned on many of these items as aspects of his story. Likewise, when you write every character the same there is no payout for having the character mention how little difference their allies being different from them makes to the story.

In the end, the book isn't bad. It is every bit the summer popcorn action flick with all the character development you would expect from that. However, after all the hype of the author and his works - simply being alright isn't good enough. Much like the details of the book itself, after all that build up it fails to deliver on the payout.

I'm not saying don't bother buying this one. I'm just saying that it's average at best.

I simply could not pass up hearing Will Wheaton performing the reading. It was a glorious pairing.

I've been a fan of the Harry Dresden series for years as well as similar series. Schaefer's Daniel Faust series is very much like those, but in a world where the more clear cut lines between right and wrong, good and bad, were reduced to muddled shades of grey. This is not a series for the faint of heart, it gets intense. However, the picture painted of the occult underground of Las Vegas and the creatures which inhabit that world makes for a compelling read/listen.

I absolutely endorse this book.
