Historia
On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next 12 months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally - and willing to fight to the end. In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows how Churchill taught the British people "the art of being fearless."

Only the British upper class were there?
Revisado: 04-10-25
I chose this after reading his excellent The Demon of Unrest. I admire Churchill and was looking forward to an indepth analysis. What there was was spoiled by endless accounts of the food, play and lifestyles of the upper class of England. At times it seemed he was writing a nineteenth century romance novel focusing on the elite. He tried to show their human side but was lost in useless tidbits.

Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

But as she tracks her twin’s final movements, cracks begin to emerge.

Disappointing for Silva
Revisado: 07-21-23
Admittedly I am a fan of Silva but this was bad. How much time was wasted on obscure artists which had nothing to do with the plot only to show the author's ability to drop names, same was true with naming so many streets. Never got into any background on the artists or streets he loves to name.
If this had been my first Silva I would never read another.

Historia
From Martin Clark - praised by Entertainment Weekly as "our best legal-thriller writer" - comes a wickedly clever, tenderhearted, and intricately plotted novel about a hard-luck lawyer's refusal to concede defeat, even as fate, the court system, and a gang of untouchable con artists conspire against him.

Many turns not all anticipated. Held my interest throughout without a lot of sides that authors use to show they know a place. Stuck to the plot and enjoyed the narration.

His job is to destroy the most illegal of commodities, the printed book, along with the houses in which they are hidden. Many years have passed since I first was assigned to read this. Have we advanced far from 70 years ago? While we don’t have screens on 3 walls, many homes have 70” TVs. News broadcasts are filled with opinions on both sides. Internet has replaced books.
Glad I listened again

As dusk approaches a small Dublin suburb in the summer of 1984, mothers begin to call their children home. But on this warm evening, three children do not return from the dark and silent woods. Disappointed
Revisado: 02-01-21
I had looked forward to another Tanya French novel. After 20 endless hours I was disappointed. The opening mystery was never solved even though at every turn I expected it. The other dragged on with so many side stories that were irrelevant and didn’t even contribute to the understanding of the main protagonist.
Not up to her standard. Drags on and on with no resolution.

Historia
Shocking and controversial when it was first published in 1939, Steinbeck's Pulitzer prize-winning epic The Grapes of Wrath remains his undisputed masterpiece. Set against the background of Dust Bowl Oklahoma and Californian migrant life, it tells of Tom Joad and his family, who, like thousands of others, are forced to travel west in search of the promised land. Their story is one of false hopes, thwarted desires, and broken dreams, yet out of their suffering Steinbeck created a drama that is intensely human, yet majestic in its scale and moral vision.

It’s been a half century since I first read this. So delighted to again experience Steinbeck’s excellent characterization and descriptions. No history of the 30’s can compare. Excellent narration.
Plan to “catch up “ on more Steinbeck
