Historia
Nimble and expertly researched, The Devil’s Best Trick brilliantly melds cultural and historical commentary and a suspenseful true-crime narrative. Randall Sullivan, whose reportage and narrative skill has been called “extraordinary” and “enthralling” by Rolling Stone, takes on a bold task in this book that is both biography of the Devil and a look at how evil manifests in the world.

Interesting but lacking. The author meandered and the point of the book was unfortunately lost.

Entertaining
Revisado: 01-18-23
This is an entertaining story if you can keep track of all the back and forth between a timeline of about 1-2 years or more. The protagonist, a detective named Dan, needs a fuller character arc OR something. Just didn’t find him interesting or likable. Great “whodunnit” story for free though.

I wasn't always like this, you know - paranoid, temperamental, vindictive. I mean, sure, I've always been a bit....high strung. But, I never used to stalk my therapist patients. Or yell at them. Or hold them captive in my garage. No, all of that started after the incidents at Lonesome Woods Boarding School. And I'm not talking about the school shooter. This was something far more insidious - something....infectious. Like a cancerous disease that tore through the student body, rotting young hearts one by one.

LGBTQ Subject Matter
Revisado: 10-22-22
This book contains “soft porn” LGBTQ subject matter. The protagonist is a homosexual man who works as a school psychologist at a Co-Ed boarding school. He enters into an intimate relationship with a mysterious man in town which leads him into what seems like the supernatural.

Historia
It's not easy being king. Especially when you've got an allergy to sunrise and sunset, a fire goddess for a mother-in-law, demonic adversaries, random assassins, and a basement full of insecurities to cope with. Add to that his daughter, the fire priestess/princess; a couple of lightly deranged professional magicians; a whole city full of wizards; and enough squabbling princes to resemble a kindergarten argument. It's enough to make a man want to just go home.

every single book ends with disappointment or awful outcomes for the main character. it's a total shame too, because the premise and characters are awesome. I will not bother continuing with this series.

Dripping with Venom for Female Researchers
Revisado: 01-04-22
Whoa! Peter Vronsky's description of feminist researchers/academics is dripping with venom. His enmity is especially sharp for a female professor at the City University of New York - I am shocked if she has not filed suit against Vronsky for how awful he bad mouths her in this book. It was so bad that I could not finish listening and it caused me to lose a level of esteem for Vronsky and his work. He posits the researchers as "us vs them" with feminist researchers on one side and male researchers on the other. The misogyny is blatant and its gross.

NOT for sensitive readers
Revisado: 12-17-21
If you are sensitive about crime topics involving child abuse, this book is not for you. If you don’t appreciate graphic sexual content, then this book is not for you. If you are a hardened true crime fan, and the crime of child abuse doesn’t trigger you and you enjoy a little soft porn, then you might like this book. The narrator is great. However, the story centers on a highly narcissistic woman and her “kind and sexy” husband who enjoy a great sex life and relationship up until she gets pregnant. Then the woman’s narcissism leads them into tragedy after tragedy. The wife was a prolific author who suffers a car accident that leaves her bedridden and brain damaged. The good husband continues to care for her, but then invites another female writer into their lives to finish the wife’s books. This other woman moves into the couples home to work on finishing the book series and read through all the wife’s works. Predictably the husband and this other woman strike up an affair. The other women insinuates herself into their marital affairs and their life where she judges the wife harshly (and maybe mistakenly) that leads to yet another tragedy. Though it is written ok, none of the characters are likable and the ending was a let down. It would have been so much better had the author clung to the psychological motives, thoughts and behaviors of a highly malignant narcissistic sociopath.

Good but could be better
Revisado: 04-08-21
This is a Good resource for law students, law graduates, and practicing attorneys to learn the basic rules about Immigration Law in the US. It is not for a layperson. It’s good, however, the table of contents is atrocious, as it lacks a description for each chapter. So it doesn’t allow you to move around inside the book to listen to specific topics. You guys need to do a better table of contents.

Mental Illness and Murder in Farm Town USA
Revisado: 09-20-19
Ms. Flynn is a master storyteller in this murder mystery set against the backdrop of a small USA farm town. The author deftly creates each character with realistic flair, attributing each with human flaws, such as mental illness, love, jealousy, etc. However, a thread of hopefulness is weaved throughout as we follow the main character through her process of self-discovery. BRAVO. Truly a masterfully written piece of work. It is so realistic that it is hard reading for those who are uncomfortable with works that cut so close to the truth.

Historia
Libby Day was seven when her mother and two sisters were murdered in "The Satan Sacrifice of Kinnakee, Kansas". As her family lay dying, little Libby fled their tiny farmhouse into the freezing January snow. She lost some fingers and toes, but she survived, and famously testified that her 15-year-old brother, Ben, was the killer. Twenty-five years later, Ben sits in prison, and troubled Libby lives off the dregs of a trust created by well-wishers who've long forgotten her.

American Culture
Revisado: 09-15-19
This book captures the cultural norms of a poor, yet hard-working, American farm family. The farm, led by an American woman, and her shiftless, alcoholic, good-for-nothing husband was not making enough money. It showed how the men farmers got their feed, seed, and equipment at low prices, while she was made to pay much higher prices simply because she was a woman. It showed how this farm woman had to put up with sexual harassment and other indignities, just to sell her farm goods. Meanwhile her no-good husband drank and frittered away money, and the children suffered without food, heat, clothes, and proper hygiene. It showed how callous American farmers were toward their peers who fell on hard times. The entire social system sounds awful. Awful people, in an awful environment, doing awful things to each other. The economic system is even worse and more predatory. There is not even one decent adult in this whole debacle. Yet and still, there are murders committed and the suspense of who did it will carry you right through to the end, where I find my head shaking in disgust as the real “who-done-it” story is just as awful as the farm community and the people in it.
It’s a riveting and suspenseful tale, which is well written, as I was able to envision the town, the farm, and the people. It’s such a realistic tale, that sometimes you forget it’s a fictional story. Definitely worth the read if you enjoy the genre.

Interesting Account of FBI Profilers
Revisado: 08-14-19
Written by the man that started the serial killer FBI profiling program at Quantico. What seems like arrogance at first, eventually reveals itself to be the pain and weariness of a man who spent 30 years looking into the mind of sex fueled murderers. One can’t do this work without being damaged by it and the author is very real and honest about the personal damage it did to him. At the same time, it is an excellent account of the history of the FBIs profiler unit, as well as some of the big cases the unit covered in that time span. This is the book you want if you are thinking of becoming an FBI Profiler. It pulls no punches.
