Historia
January, 1932: Ben MacCarthy and his father watch a vagabond variety revue making a stop in the Irish countryside. Ben's father, mesmerized by Venetia Kelly, the troupe's magnetic headliner, makes a fateful decision: to abandon his family and set off on the road with Miss Kelly and her caravan. Ben's mother, shattered by the desertion, exhorts "find him and bring him back", thereby sending the boy on a Homeric voyage into manhood.

In the midst of what should be an effulgent time of life, with its days bright with music, family, and rowing on the Seine, Jules is confronted headlong and all at once by a series of challenges to his principles, livelihood, and home, forcing him to grapple with his complex past and find a way forward. He risks fraud to save his terminally ill infant grandson, matches wits with a renegade insurance investigator, is drawn into an act of savage violence, and falls deeply, excitingly in love with a young cellist who is a third his age.

Historia
This epic work tells the story of the Hemingses, whose close blood ties to our third president had been systematically expunged from American history until very recently. Now, historian and legal scholar Annette Gordon-Reed traces the Hemings family from its origins in Virginia in the 1700s to the family's dispersal after Jefferson's death in 1826. It brings to life not only Sally Hemings and Thomas Jefferson but also their children and Hemings's siblings, who shared a father with Jefferson's wife, Martha.

Tedious at Best
Revisado: 06-26-21
I was looking for a book about Thomas Jefferson because what I already knew about him was awesome. This is not a history book, to me it is mostly conjecture and speculation. The author spends a lot of time stating “we don’t really know” because there are no records. This is not based on facts. Further, the author talks about events and then draws her own conclusions, which by the way, were not the conclusions I came to. My overall conclusion – the book is verbose, often repetitive. Written by an angry women obsessed with confirming her theory of white supremacy. I think many people loved Thomas Jefferson, including Sally Hemings, but the author can’t bring herself to believe it.

Historia
In this stirring audiobook, David McCullough tells the intensely human story of those who marched with General George Washington in the year of the Declaration of Independence, when the whole American cause was riding on their success, without which all hope for independence would have been dashed and the noble ideals of the Declaration would have amounted to little more than words on paper.

Historia
McCullough's John Adams has the sweep and vitality of a great novel. This is history on a grand scale, an audiobook about politics, war, and social issues, but also about human nature, love, religious faith, virtue, ambition, friendship, and betrayal, and the far-reaching consequences of noble ideas. Above all, it is an enthralling, often surprising story of one of the most important and fascinating Americans who ever lived.

Historia
In this audiobook, the author of Seven Gothic Tales gives a true account of her life on her plantation in Kenya. She tells with classic simplicity of the ways of the country and the natives; of the beauty of the Ngong Hills and coffee trees in blossom; of her guests, from the Prince of Wales to Knudsen, the old charcoal burner, who visited her; of primitive festivals; of big game that were her near neighbors - lions, rhinos, elephants, zebras, buffaloes; and of Lulu, the little gazelle who came to live with her, unbelievably ladylike and beautiful.

This was a re-read
Revisado: 01-17-21
I read this book back in 1985 when the movie came out. The book is more about Africa and her adventures than the love story in the movie. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I didn't care for the performance, I have heard tape recordings of Isak. I didn't know if narrator's accent was really the narrator or if she was pretending to be Isak Dinesen. Isak sounds like a difficult person with many issues in her life. We tried to find her house (now a museum in Denmark) but we missed it. I would have liked to see the books that belonged to Denys Finch-Hatton.

Historia
One beautiful September day, three men convene on Martha's Vineyard, friends ever since meeting in college circa the 60s. They couldn't have been more different then, or even today - Lincoln's a commercial real estate broker, Teddy a tiny-press publisher, and Mickey a musician beyond his rockin' age. But each man holds his own secrets, in addition to the monumental mystery that none of them has ever stopped puzzling over since a Memorial Day weekend right here on the Vineyard in 1971: the disappearance of the woman each of them loved - Jacy Calloway.
