Historia
In 2059, two vastly different groups of people portrayed by the compelling trio of Brendan Fraser (Academy Award winner), Luke Kirby (Emmy Award winner), and Vanessa Sears (Dora Award winner) undergo cryonic suspension. While their bodies are frozen, their minds, still active and awake, are uploaded into a massive quantum computer. The first group are all astronauts, about to leave Earth on a one-way interstellar colonization mission. The second group consists of convicted murderers and volunteers who elect to serve their sentences in a virtual-reality prison.

The story is a bit cliché, but I enjoyed the journey. I also found the modern politics a bit heavy handed, but overall it wasn't awful. Worth a four star rating.

Historia
Charlie7 is the progenitor of a mechanical race he built from the ashes of a dead world—Earth. He is a robot of leisure and idle political meddling—a retirement well-earned. Or he was, until a human girl named Eve was dropped in his lap. Geneticists have restored Earth’s biome and begun repopulation. But primate cloning is in its infancy; human cloning is banned. Far from a failed genetics experiment, Eve is brilliant, curious, and heartbreakingly naïve about her species’ history. But Eve’s creator wants her back and has a gruesome fate planned for her.

Stellar Performance
Revisado: 11-18-24
I thought the narration of this novel was spectacular. It's unfortunate that the story wasn't as special. This has the makings of a great story. I love the concept, but the way it was written just didn't capture my attention until very late in the story. I feel like there's a heavy emphasis on the technical/scientific details of "project transhuman" to the detriment of the story. It could have worked, but it fell flat for me in this case.

Transcends Tropes
Revisado: 11-04-24
The start of this story really had me running for the hills. I felt like I should prepare for a political sermon. Fortunately, this did not happen. Although there are some subtle political undertones, the story does not suffer as a result. The "communist uprising" subtext is overshadowed by the hero's journey.

Historia
Since time immemorial the Spires have sheltered humanity, towering for miles over the mist-shrouded surface of the world. Within their halls aristocratic houses have ruled for generations, developing scientific marvels, fostering trade alliances, and building fleets of airships to keep the peace. Captain Grimm commands the merchant ship Predator. Fiercely loyal to Spire Albion, he has taken their side in the cold war with Spire Aurora, disrupting the enemy's shipping lines by attacking their cargo vessels.

The Aeronauts Windlass is a book that I intend to revisit several times. I had a wonderful first listen, but I'm sure that there are many small details that I missed. As a sci-fi fan, this world is the perfect representation of a world between steam and cyber fantasy.

Adventures in Space
Revisado: 07-23-21
This feels like the most genuine, most relatable, most heartwarming collection of exploits from a tabletop rpg adaptation of Firefly. I swear you could make up an entire ruleset for a TTRPG just based on what happens. Carl/Brad the plucky charisma based ace fighter pilot. Tanny the strength based fighter/barbarian that's addicted to chems. Mort the wizard whose source of power is his innate persuasiveness with the universe. Truly a spectacular adventure that I can only hope gets a mainstream adaptation some day.

Nothing ever changes in Sanders. The town's still got a video store, for God's sake. So why doesn't Eli Teague want to leave? Not that he'd ever admit it, but maybe he's been waiting - waiting for the traveler to come back. The one who's roared into his life twice before, pausing just long enough to drop tantalizing clues before disappearing in a cloud of gunfire and a squeal of tires. The one who's a walking anachronism, with her tricorne hat, flintlock rifle, and steampunked Model A Ford.

Worth a listen
Revisado: 06-28-19
Predictable at times, but still worthy. The narrator was a particularly good. The story is quintessential Americana. It's full of nods to things you probably learned in primary school. The main protagonist also goes out of their way to keep the swearing to a minimum. I'd say this id a recommended listen even for younger audiences.

On the world called Hyperion, beyond the law of the Hegemony of Man, there waits the creature called the Shrike. There are those who worship it. There are those who fear it. And there are those who have vowed to destroy it. In the Valley of the Time Tombs, where huge, brooding structures move backward through time, the Shrike waits for them all.

Good but not memorable
Revisado: 09-07-18
Clear amd well structured plot. Interesting characters with great voice acting. Lacked major intrigue. The main antagonist felt distant at all times, and the characters barely have an arch to speak of. Hopefully the second book delivers what I'm looking for in a space epic.

Confused and Disinterested
Revisado: 07-18-18
The meandering nature of the simultaneous arcs and the jarring timescale jumps left me confused toward the end. I found myself listening just to get to the resolution. As I have now made it to the end I can see the reasoning, but the execution is just so massively bad.
The main flaw of this book is that it tries to be an epic series in just one book. Each Porsche, Bianca, and time jump between Holston chapters could have been one in a series of novels. The lack of focus on the characters made the overall story lose cohesion. Asimov's Foundation series did this the right way in telling compartmentalized "hero" arcs inside a rich background universe over the course of several books.
Narrated very well despite all of the drawbacks of the story.
I'd recommend passing on this one unless you're into some pretty niche sci-fi that I don't want to spoil due to the story implications.

Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Surprisingly Good
Revisado: 06-27-18
The story was predictable, and some of the problems experienced by the protagonist were frustrating in their convenience, but the plot made sense. The place where this one shines is the performance. Rosario Dawson spins a splendid narrative full of colorful characters. She's believable in each role, regardless of accent, and flawless in execution. Superb voice acting.

With his trademark mirth and boundless charisma, actor Nick Offerman brought the loveable shenanigans of Twain's adolescent hero to life in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Now, in yet another virtuosic performance, the actor proves that despite being separated by a span of over a century, his connection to the author and his work is undeniable and that theirs is a timeless collaboration that should not be missed.

Offerman Delivers
Revisado: 06-20-18
Much like many of Twain's better known works, there is quite a bit of repetitive and pointless exposition. However the performance by Nick Offerman will drag you through the tough bits, and deliver an ending to cherish. Not my favorite Arthurian legend, but a good take. Worthy of primary school study in my honest opinion. Unless you're a fan of Twain, Offerman, or Arthur you may want to give this one a pass.
