Historia
A new world order has come. Society as we know it is no longer. Religion, politics, entertainment, and consumerism do not exist. All are equal, all are the same. No color, no gender, no difference. The human brain is rewired to rid itself of all nasty emotions, all preferences, and all nonconformity. A young girl on the brink of losing herself to this society that condemns and exterminates human emotions is thrust into a war she didn't know existed.

Not what I expected!
Revisado: 06-30-22
This book would be a great movie adaptation! A sci-fi story like no other, this novel is cleverly written with tons of twists and turns that will keep you on your toes. There is a mystery-element to it as well, the character developments have you questioning things throughout, which kept me engaged in the plot. The narrator had a very fitting tone for the story as well, which I am often times picky about when listening to audiobooks. This author really makes you question the possibilities of a dystopian future surrounding a Hunger Games-type societal system.

Great for Everyone
Revisado: 12-28-18
This book has a focus on life with autism, however I feel like the overall message is a useful tool for everyone in the fact that we all need to slow down and be present in the moment in our daily lives. If we look more internally at problems, instead of looking for an external factor to blame, this can help us view life through a different perspective. The author has such a strong connection autism because her son lives with autism. She reveals her and her son's experiences with this, the good and the bad. She becomes vulnerable with what she's learned, felt, and processed through this experience. One thing the author discusses is her son's unique reactions to situations and her instinctual feeling of resistance, nonacceptance that comes with human nature. She describes getting stressed from her son's reactions and learning the right and wrong ways to react to these feelings. Gayle teaches us that there are new ways to teach your brain to approach difficult situations. You do not have to resort to your initial or gut reaction. There are poems included in this book, which is just another great way to express these challenging feelings that life brings, let alone life with a child with autism. This book is well-written in the sense that the author is sitting in the same room with you, having a conversation. This book is a good read for anyone, let alone those living with autism.

Bronx born and bred, Mackenzie Ferrara is both nervous and excited to begin her career as a restorer of fine art at the prestigious Cloisters in New York City. The star of the restoration team is a handsome and reserved Italian, Anthony Bataglia. On loan from the Ufizzi, he is renowned for his ability to bring pre-Renaissance treasures back to life. Despite a rocky start, the two form a close working relationship, which Mackenzie hopes will blossom into something more. But as she works with him she begins to notice patterns and unexplainable similarities in all of his restorations.

Uniqueness from Genre-Blending
Revisado: 06-28-18
This novel is packed with romance, action, science fiction, and history to create a unique story of an art restorer in NYC searching for answers and finding much more than expected. This historical fiction explores different worlds and how art is connected through it all. Between NYC and historical Italy, the author has you constantly on your toes with character expectations and plot outline. The uniqueness comes from the genre blending- I've yet to read many books that can blend art history and science fiction without struggle, like O'Connell does. I had the audiobook version of this piece- I definitely wouldn't mind reading it for myself again to re-create the descriptive places this story takes you.
