I love the Consortium series by this author, so I have given this book multiple tries. But the narrator is a weird combination of boring and girly, sounding nothing like the former military leader she supposedly is.

On top of this I am 3/4 of the way through and we are on our fourth detailed description of cooking a meal? Is this the food network? I mean nothing has happened, no battles, no injuries, no conflict. Just somehow they took on a job to solve a crime with no actual briefing? Like they just gradually are getting Intel during other conversations? And cooking? So much cooking.

I listened to this whole book because I wanted to understand the main character's history. But, the Male Lead engages in some SERIOUS all out abusive stalking behaviors.

Memorable Quote - "She says things she doesn't mean all the time." WTF No

Literally stalking her, and sending harassing texts to someone she's seeing? Like these are all major red flags and abusive behaviors.

I especially don't like how this story infantalized an otherwise intelligent and hard working young woman. There were so many awkward "Diva Princess" moments and other things that it made her fairly unlikeable. But a woman who could work hard being pre law AND a ballerina would have to be intelligent and hard working, and certainly not the hot mess she is in most of this book.

Oh, and lets not forget the level of completely illegal workplace harassment, and the super gross age differences.

I get that Romances are fantasy, and I love that escape, but, why can't the male lead actually be a somewhat decent person?

I almost returned this book when it started with the usual clap trap about how hugely fat the Mc was. Ultimately the story redeemed that as not a great point of view. But if I had not enjoyed the first book in this series so much I would not have kept going.

Ultimately I really liked it, it was sexy and the romance tugged at my heart strings. The main character goes through a real transformation, not just a physical one and that made it very enjoyable.

Two things had me going "I don't know" at the beginning of this book, the first is the narrator who sounds incredibly young, the second was the childish animosity between the two leads. It didn't hook me.

But I kept listening, and the way the romance unraveled made it worth it. The first few chapters are superficial surface stuff, but as you go beneath the surface the situation changes and things become much more interesting and even compelling.

I ended up feeling so much of this book and it was funny and delightful.

The one big complaint I have is that some of the assumptions about business operations in this book are deeply unrealistic. I realized eventually that the author was reflecting a highly dysfunctional workplace, but that wasn't explained early enough in the book or deeply enough and (MINOR SPOILER ALERT) I spent a lot of time rolling my eyes about the idea that two executive assistants could be considered for a direct promotion to COO.

This book is great. The characters are witty, and fun, and both go on an emotional journey that doesn't feel maudlin or contrived. The book ends up being about people learning to make the most of their lives and finding their place in the world.

The sexual tension was palpable and glorious. And I've never wanted to visit Paris more.

The narrators really brought the performance to the next level. Beware ladies, you may swoon over Richard Armitage, be careful if you listen while driving.

I held back on listening to this one, you shouldn't, it's great!

I really enjoyed most of this series. The steampunk science fiction elements have always been very interesting to me. But this book really stepped up on the romantic tension as well as the political intrigue. I think I especially liked Zenobia as our heroine.

I love Loretta Chase, and this may be my new favorite of her books.

Though, to be honest, I didn't expect it to be. This kind of story with a love triangle is usually not my thing. I usually appreciate the fact that there is an underlying danger or other story present in her books as well.

But I was really captivated by Olympia, being a girl who loves to read and it always pragmatic, I loved seeing her journey. It made my heart ache to see her torn between duty to her family, and a desire to truly finally be herself. I really loved the moments of laughter and joy shared by the two protaganists and caught myself laughing along with them many times.

I can't wait for the rest of these Difficult Duke books, and I know I will be listening to this one again.

I was really disappointed in this book. I loved Tracy Anne Warren's Husband Trap series, so I thought the somewhat lukewarm description of this book might have just been a back of the book error.

But actually, re reading it now the description sounds better than the book I actually read.

The book was not very historically accurate in a lot of big and small ways, it made me wish that the story was set in a fantasy universe so I could believe that a princess would have only one maid somehow? And no relationship with that maid? And no guards assigned to her? And no sense of political maneuvering or ability to communicate?

But I don't think even that would have made the half of the book taken up with breathless descriptions of twoooo wuuuuuuuuvvvvvvv enjoyable.

The book has no sense of humor whatsoever, which might have saved it from having an incredibly dull and predictable story line. But instead it is breathless and earnest, emotional and frankly exhausting.

I kept going just because I kept hoping that somehow some dramatic tension would be introduced via some method other than FEEELIIIINGS. Or perhaps a happy resolution that was a nice payoff for the reader.

I was really disappointed. Ultimately I felt like what I listened to were all the boring parts of a pretty predictable story line.

The story of this book is so interesting a character intent on being a loner, protecting herself and her family from mafia like interests -- while also being a person of intense power, and trying to hide it from everyone.

Unfortunately I found myself irritated and reluctant to return to the story over and over, and I think that had to do with the narrator. I don't think she made the main character sound as strong as she really was, and it was a distraction from the story.

This book was great, the characters were well developed, and the plot line was interesting and engaging. The romantic tension and build up had my heart in my throat through a lot of it, but so did the adventure!

The book was also very well performed, adding so much to the story, especially the different languages and accents, it was seamless.

I was very pleased with my purchase and will be listening to more of this series for sure!
