Historia
Cassie Forrest isn't surprised to learn that the day she’s decided to get her life together is also the day the world ends. After all, she’s been on a self-imposed losing streak since her survivalist parents died: she’s stopped painting, broken off her engagement to Adrian and dated a real jerk. Rectifying her mistakes has to wait, however, because Cassie and her friends have just enough time to escape Brooklyn for her parents’ cabin before Bornavirus LX turns them into zombies, too.

Odd

…that every character was marvelously convincing except the main one, our narrator. She just did not cohere as a person for me. The whining. But it was a convincing zombie tale, realistic and lowkey.

Historia
A successful film professor and podcaster, Bodie Kane is content to forget her past—the family tragedy that marred her adolescence, her four largely miserable years at a New Hampshire boarding school, and the murder of her former roommate, Thalia Keith, in the spring of their senior year. Though the circumstances surrounding Thalia’s death and the conviction of the school’s athletic trainer, Omar Evans, are hotly debated online, Bodie prefers—needs—to let sleeping dogs lie.

Excellent in every way
Revisado: 04-01-25
A slow unfolding of a memoir-like, first person story as Bodie returns to her high school boarding school to teach a 2 week podcast course. We meet all the classmates from her 4 years there, we meet teachers, we hear about the terrible murder back then. We intercut with difficult times in the present. It’s really a good listen read. And of course, it’s Julia!

Nice sweet no surprises
Revisado: 03-26-25
But we don’t love our genre for surprises! The misunderstanding wore thin and the demise of the villain was a little too quick but it was enjoyable!

Curious though if the other mystery with Coldmoon will also continue. Assume and hope so. And of course, after decades of the Constance Aloysius thwarted love story, hoping for a happier outcome. Anyone know why he just will not give in?

Historia
In the wake of the tragedy, 17-year-old Franny found solace in a group of friends whose experiences mirrored her own. The group calls themselves The Ordinary, and they spend their free time investigating local ghost stories and legends, filming their exploits. It's silly, it's fun, and it keeps them from dwelling on the sadness that surrounds them. Until one evening, when the strange and dangerous thing they film isn't fiction - it's a bright light, something massive hurtling toward them from the sky. And when it crashes and the teens go to investigate...everything changes.

Beautiful writing but terrible plotting—hung on and hung on, hoping for better times. Then finally just to find out if she had a resolution to the story arc in mind. Imho she did not.

Revisado: 09-21-24
We are familiar with the Bridgerton men as reluctant, but inevitable, romantics. This time, young Gregory moves in a different direction, and there is much more genuine suspense in this plot than in our usual Bridgerton confections! Just terrific.

Historia
Obituary writer Nadine Barbault doesn’t mind being called “Lady Death”. It suits the ice queen persona she’s cultivated to survive the fast-paced Toronto Herald. So when Nadine learns that famous (and reclusive) author Dot Voline has died, she doesn’t hesitate to run the obituary…only to discover that Dot is very much alive. Nadine’s screw-up has brought Wesley Chen of the rival Spear no end of joy—she’s been a thorn in his extremely ambitious side for years. But the renewed interest in Dot also surfaced chatter about a mysterious past scandal.
