Historia
Holly Danger's current assignment, gleaned from a set of foggy instructions and a handful of coin stuffed into a slot, is to pick up a street kid who's about to terminate himself off a cliff. And, as a rule, she doesn't turn down currency. Her job as a salvager keeps her fed and clothed above the norm, which isn't saying much. The norm in this city is a scrape-by existence in a post-apocalyptic world, where the rain never stops, food is always scarce, and the elite have deserted the ranks in search of something better.

Awesome start to an awesome series
Revisado: 07-28-24
This book, and the 5 which follow it, take place in a plausible post-apocalyptic society. If you like science fiction, fast-paced action, and a tough, independent female lead, you will love this book. Also, the narrator has a voice that is admirably suited for a female lead like Holly Danger. This book is what happens when an excellent author and an equally excellent narrator team up. Highly recommended.

All I wanted was a burrito. My name is Brandon Ferryman. I went out one night to get a burrito. Who knew that such a simple thing would change my life, or end it? I woke up on the side of the road with some pumpkin-headed monster saying he was the god of death, fate, and justice. I was chosen to run a very special establishment. A place that lay between worlds. A place called the Coffin Hotel. Now I have to fight monsters, free spirits, and run a mystical hotel. I'm clearly not qualified, but when has that ever stopped anyone from doing anything.

Sex, violence and little else.
Revisado: 05-25-24
This book has little character or plot development. The women seems to have no ambition but to have sex with the hotel manager at every opportunity. He has no ambition but to have sex with every woman in sight, and solve all of his problems violently. This book is full of sexual remarks, sex scenes, violence, and little else. Don't waste your credit. I am going to return this book and get my credit back.

Talk about crrepy!
Revisado: 12-25-23
This is one of the creepiest stories I have ever listened to. Elizabeth Rogers has just the right kind of voice for reading scary stories like this. This book will make you think you have bedbugs, even if you don't. It will also make you doubt your sanity if you see a bedbug. The apartment is not haunted by the usual ghosts, but by bedbugs. These also are not your typical bedbugs. I will say no more because I do not wish to spoil the experience for others. If you like a creepy story that will keep you up at night, read by one of the most excellent narrators out there, you will like this book.

Suspenseful, well-written, exellently narrated.
Revisado: 12-03-23
This book and its sequel take place in a post-apocalyptic setting, where vampires have replaced humanity at the top of the food chain. Most modern technology has been lost. Humans are slowly beginning to gather and form towns, rebuild civilization and fight back against the vampires. Now, other species are starting to produce vampires. The protagonists are a group who fight and kill vampires, and try to protect humans from them. This book has the power to make you feel as if you are actually living in this world of the undead. Daniel Pierce and J. F. Harding team up to bring an excellent audio experience.

Refreshing, suspenseful, awesome.
Revisado: 10-21-23
This is a take on the post-apocalyptic genre that I have never encountered before. Alien creatures attack humanity. The only way to be safe from them is to blindfold yourself. In other words, you deprive yourself of your primary sense. This is something you can actually try at home. It will give you at least a taste of what the characters in this book lived with for years. That is one reason why I love this book. Also, there is very little of the thuggery that is so prevalent in post-apocalyptic fiction. This is a fairly long book, but I listened to it in one day. Once I started I could not stop. Cassandra Campbell is one of my favorite narrators, and she totally does this book justice. I highly recommend this book and its sequel.

Bordering on the ridiculous.
Revisado: 10-21-23
Even fantasy needs a certain element of plausibility. Magic has laws and rules, just as science does. In this book and its sequels, there are no rules. Emily learns she is a witch at 28 years old. Within a couple of days, she is teleporting, time traveling and conjuring things as if she had done it all her life. Witches use magic for mundane things like tidying a room, or doing the dishes. They conjure things out of thin air, everything from a pizza to a castle. I simply could not get into this book, because the profligate use of magic, and the complete lack of a plausible framework of magical rules irritated me. I do not recommend this book, or this series.

Historia
Waverly Estate is a sentinel that looks down from abrupt roof lines above The Hudson River. More than 100 years after The Revolutionary War, its presence continues to whisper of battles won and lost; of death and vacuous halls and hearts, and of treacherous deeds committed. Its residents are not troubled by the dead alone. Far more ghastly are the living. It is the year 1858 and Garson, the pitiless master of Waverly, lies dying. A magnificent dome above him boasts paintings of Rene Bonhomme, a French artist who covets more than Garson's wicked wife, Hannah.

This is what happens when an excellent author and an excellent narrator team up. This story will suck you in right from page 1, and not let you go until the end. This is one of the best haunted house thrillers I have ever encountered. I would give it a 10 star rating if I could.

Not bad, but could be much better.
Revisado: 09-23-23
I like this book because it reminds me of the 60's horror classics I grew up on. However, the content and narration leave a good deal to be desired. There was only basic plot development. Character development was virtually absent. The writing style was heavy-handed, and the narration was robotic. In the hands of a more skilled author/narrator team, this has the potential to go from an average book to something much higher. As it is, I can only give it a 2.

Best Climate Fiction I have read in a long time.
Revisado: 09-06-23
Between the excellent writing of Bev Prescott and the superb narration of Dominique Dibbell this is a highly enjoyable read. The protagonist is a tough woman who lives in a very plausible dystopian future. In fact, if we carry on as we have been, we may very well find ourselves in a world not unlike that described in this book. I highly recommend this book. Very entertaining, and it can make you think as well.

It was the apocalypse, just not the one anybody expected...US Army Captain, Ed Crowley has a very tragic reason for not liking dogs. He’s about to have 115 million more. A mutated rabies virus is sweeping through the world’s dog population, and no one is safe. With over 90 million domestic and tens of millions more wild and feral dogs in the United States, Rabies 2.0 is about to unleash hell. The infected animals aren’t just rabid, they have mutated into ugly, insatiable, and very large killing machines.

Good naration, poor writing.
Revisado: 01-04-23
I had high hopes for this book after reading the publisher's summary. I was disappointed. There is no lead-in to the apocalypse. There is a brief paragraph on the first page explaining that we don't know where Rabies 2.0 came from, how it started, or how it spread. Then we are dumped straight into the apocalypse. Who are these soldiers? Why have they been sent to rescue this group of civilians? What state is society in? Has it collapsed, or is there still a functioning infrastructure? How long has the apocalypse been going on? Who are all of these people, and how did they come together in this town? Where is this town located? All of these questions and more go unanswered. Furthermore, if you are a dog lover, you will probably find this book profoundly disturbing. I am a dog lover, and this book disturbed and disgusted me. The protagonist is a dog hater, and dogs are the bad guys. I will not be purchasing the rest of the series. I do not recommend this book.
