Moriarty bests herself
Revisado: 10-16-21
I love Liane Moriatry's ability to keep the reader on their toes. Did the husband do it? Did the stranger? How was the dog involved? No detail given is ever random. As in any well written mystery, red herrings abound, but all all there for a very good reason.

My hometown through new eyes (no spoilers)
Revisado: 07-22-21
I always knew Portland was keeping it weird…. I have listened to all of the Alchemist series to date, and what a loving portrait of Hawthorne Street and environs. The enthusiastic crew of “detectives”, the delicious vegan meals (I’m a carnivore), but most importantly the twists that keep the story going are delightful. I am looking forward to more Zoe Faust and Dorian!

Historia
One of the 20th century's enduring works, One Hundred Years of Solitude is a widely beloved and acclaimed novel known throughout the world and the ultimate achievement in a Nobel Prize-winning career. The novel tells the story of the rise and fall of the mythical town of Macondo through the history of the Buendía family. Rich and brilliant, it is a chronicle of life, death, and the tragicomedy of humankind. In the beautiful, ridiculous, and tawdry story of the Buendía family, one sees all of humanity, just as in the history, myths, growth, and decay of Macondo, one sees all of Latin America.

What in the heck happened?????
- De Melinda en 02-05-14
Beautiful Story poorly narrated
Revisado: 05-03-17
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The work itself is extraordinary, the story sinks in like a dream, the narration is poor. I have read it both in the original and in English. Rabassa's translation is beyond reproach.
What didn’t you like about John Lee’s performance?
I am stumped that an Englishman who cannot pronounce Spanish names was selected to narrate this work. It was such a disconnect for me that I had to stop listening.
Could you see One Hundred Years of Solitude being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
It shouldn't ever be made into a movie or a series - I doubt that there is a director or a cast who can live up to the work.
Any additional comments?
I'd like to hear a narration in English read by bilingual actors.

If you could sum up Hag-Seed in three words, what would they be?
Favorite Shakespeare text, possibly favorite modern author, how could it not be a win!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
The narrator was beyond compare.

Faithful: notions of fidelity weave in and out of the book. Hoffman delivers again - a sweet character portrait well read. And a number of lovely canine characters that win you over.

Historia
A decade has passed since Verlaine saw Evangeline alight from the Brooklyn Bridge, the sight of her new wings a betrayal that haunts him still. Now an elite angel hunter for the Society of Angelology, he pursues his mission with single-minded devotion: to capture, imprison, and eliminate her kind. But when Evangeline suddenly appears on a twilit Paris street, Verlaine finds her nature to be unlike any of the other creatures he so mercilessly pursues, casting him into a spiral of doubt and confusion that only grows when she is abducted before his eyes....

A welcome sequel where none was expected
Revisado: 05-23-16
Would you listen to Angelopolis again? Why?
Perhaps. I so enjoyed Angelology, so I suppose if I wanted to binge listen I might.
What did you like best about this story?
For me this was a surprise sequel. It is a departure from the first book, it doesn't assume that the reader knows what happened previously.
Any additional comments?
I very much enjoy Edoardo Ballerini's narration vs the narrator of Angelology.

Revisado: 05-23-16
Would you listen to Just One Damned Thing After Another again? Why?
Probably not, since it is one in a great long series.
What did you like best about this story?
I love plucky heroines who are smart, dedicated, and a bit off kilter. And time travel - yes please!
What does Zara Ramm bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Her voice is the voice of our dear Max. Would be hard not to hear her voice if I were to read the print version. Well directed.

The years change our view point
Revisado: 05-23-16
Would you consider the audio edition of The Handmaid's Tale to be better than the print version?
I first read The Handmaid's Tale the year it was release. I saw it as a dark, tragic romance. Now as a fully fledged woman I am struck by the absolute absurdity, comedy, and truly dark nature of the story. Atwood's writing is lyrical and uncanny.
What other book might you compare The Handmaid's Tale to and why?
Goodness the Madadam trilogy - but that is a bit trite.
I know that Atwood does not like to be lumped in as a SciFi writer, but in my mind she keeps the good company of Vonnegut, Bradbury, Le Guinn... and that is my very short list.
Have you listened to any of Claire Danes’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have no comparison.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I play books while I paint, so yes I can listen in one sitting - but it is may radio.

Historia
The Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Cleopatra, the number one national best seller, unpacks the mystery of the Salem Witch Trials. It began in 1692, over an exceptionally raw Massachusetts winter, when a minister's daughter began to scream and convulse. It ended less than a year later, but not before 19 men and women had been hanged and an elderly man crushed to death. The panic spread quickly, involving the most educated men and prominent politicians in the colony. Neighbors accused neighbors, parents and children accused each other.

History Retread
Revisado: 05-23-16
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
I heard the author speak on NPR and was so swept up by her passion for her subject that I wanted to read the book! Schiff is a consummate researcher, her attention to detail is fantastic almost to obsession. I wanted more narrative and less detail. If you are passionate about dates and details you may very well enjoy this history.
What was most disappointing about Stacy Schiff’s story?
Nothing is disappointing, it is just too detailed. It is history after all.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Very well written. Very academic.
