Historia
On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when - or if - it will go away.

Ooof. King thought GEORGE BUSH was the devil?
Revisado: 07-04-24
It’s amazing to read a tale soooo political, I always remember this book as the one where Steve was fed up and went all in with a political slant. No hinting. No pussyfooting. At the time, (I read it when it came out of course) I remember thinking “surely nobody will ever be this crazy.” And I figured “oh man what a work of fiction!!”

What a fantastic original story
Revisado: 02-06-24
A parallel tale of monsters and men which wraps up in maybe 15 minutes. Such an odd long tale of character building and animosity between races up until the actual real battle that seems to run out of steam in no time — all to just (I assume?) tee up a series.

In the beginning was the Oak, its hungry roots reaching deep into the earth, its gnarled limbs searching the distant heavens. Two hundred years ago, Obediah Magrute worshipped the Oak and died violently beneath it, feeding it with his blood and bone, shouting his chilling curse to the skies. Now, Laura and Mark Avery have come to the bustling little Vermont village.

A Bad writer
Revisado: 01-11-24
You know how you start a new book, where the premise sounds good. The narrator sounds good. And all that’s left is the word smithing. The actual craft of putting together sentences?
And as the book progresses, you hear an occasional cliche or bad adjective but you think, “ahh they’re just getting started it can’t be that bad”?
This is that book. And after 20 minutes I gave up.

I had to check multiple times to confirm I was listening to the same book. Starts out great and engaging. Ends as a bad Scooby doo episode with Australia Tourism Board ads scattered thru out. The end displays the very best bad example of “show don’t tell.”
I still finished it. But oof. Go make the first writer finish the book.

Author of the National Book Award-winning All the Pretty Horses, Cormac McCarthy is one of the most provocative American stylists to emerge in the last century. The striking novel Blood Meridian offers an unflinching narrative of the brutality that accompanied the push west on the 1850s Texas frontier.

I do not get the hype on this story which is little more than a collection of … travels maybe?
Revisado: 12-07-23
I love CM’s other books, the road, child of god, no country. This one has great characters like those books, but they just wander around and do stuff. Some good. Some bad. Some gory. But at no point was I dying to know what would happen next, or during time away from the book, I wasn’t ever thinking about any deeper meaning.
I just don’t get the hype.

From the mind of the man Stephen King calls "a master of the macabre", comes a brilliant new collection of no-punches-pulled horror stories, some never-before-collected and many originals that have never been published anywhere before. Bentley Little can take the innocuous, twist it around, and write a story that will change your way of thinking. Walking Alone: Short Stories is a shining example of his talent to scare you, creep you out, and make you shudder.

Good but horrible but not bad
Revisado: 06-23-23
Narrator mispronounces so many words I kept wondering if the author ever listened to this version of his story.
I loved The Ritual, and like the Ritual, I really enjoyed the first half of this book. And like The Ritual, the second half of this book is not that good. Talk about heavy handed narration and writing! Oof.

Historia
First published in 1962, J.G. Ballard’s mesmerizing and ferociously imaginative novel not only gained him widespread critical acclaim but also established his reputation as one of the finest writers of a generation. The Drowned World imagines a terrifying world in which global warming has melted the ice caps and primordial jungles have overrun a tropical London. Set during the year 2145, this novel follows biologist Dr. Robert Kearns and his team of scientists as they confront a cityscape in which nature is on the rampage and giant lizards, dragonflies, and insects fiercely compete for domination.

Sci fi that follows people you couldn’t care about.
Revisado: 06-07-23
You know how there’s people who engage in the story, they do things and want things, and in the background there’s the uninteresting people who will probably be eaten by the monster because they’re just dull?
This is their tale. I guess. I’m 4/5 thru this title, another one where I’ve tried three times because of the rave reviews.
I can tell you two things about this story. There’s a dude named Kierens who really is just floating through as things don’t really happen, and some guy runs away and they kind of maybe go pursue him.
Other than that? This is a tale not unlike a book about the daily goings on for a hotel maid service. Just doing stuff. Then doing stuff. There’s nothing really happening.
OH THE DROWNED WORLD sounds awesome, because every three hours or so the narrator mentions deadly monsters that they avoid.
So yeah. If you ever wondered why don’t people in scary movies ever make the safe decisions? This is their tale. Very safe. Very dull. So very uninteresting.
I mean who knows. Maybe the monsters all attack in the one hour I have left. Maybe all the characters including Kierens suddenly become interesting.
I absolutely do not care.

Historia
The year is 1348. Thomas, a disgraced knight, has found a young girl alone in a dead Norman village. An orphan of the Black Death, and an almost unnerving picture of innocence, she tells Thomas that plague is only part of a larger cataclysm - that the fallen angels under Lucifer are rising in a second war on heaven, and that the world of men has fallen behind the lines of conflict. Is it delirium or is it faith? She believes she has seen the angels of God. She believes the righteous dead speak to her in dreams. And now she has convinced the faithless Thomas to shepherd her across a depraved landscape to Avignon.

I have no idea what this wants to be
Revisado: 06-07-23
10 hours into this book — there’s hint of tentacled beasts, zombies maybe, maybe a vampire? BUT NONE OF THEM SHOW UP until way way at the 14th hour.
If you love books about aimless people on the road during the bubonic plague, this is the one for you.
If you want scary, or interesting? Might want to go somewhere else.
This is my third attempt at finishing this book. There’s one hour left. And I just don’t care at all.
