Historia
In poyums, Len Pennie has created a collection that is as approachable as it is affecting; whether she's writing letters to her younger self, advocating for women's rights or adapting fairy tales to process an abusive relationship, Len's voice is bold, unashamedly frank and unmistakeably hers. She consciously fuses Scots into her poetry, cleverly ensuring that it is accessible to speakers of both languages.

The writing is excellent
Revisado: 02-25-24
Good writing makes you feel and connect. In less than a minute, these poems would give me chills or tear up or feel enraged. The subjects may not be everyone’s cup of tea but they really should be. The way she explains things is excellent and would help anyone who doesn’t already understand them, if only they took the time to listen with an open heart and mind.

Historia
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

Super fun

Great world and character building. Really engaging and enjoyable story. Leaves you wanting more but not the kind of cliffhanger where you feel like you’re dying. I liked the main narrator overall but not a lot of distinction between character voices.

Casteel Da’Neer knows all too well that very few are as cunning or vicious as the Blood Queen, but no one, not even him, could’ve prepared for the staggering revelations. The magnitude of what the Blood Queen has done is almost unthinkable.

Good narration; Will read the next book too
Revisado: 04-06-22
I don’t usually leave written reviews but wanted to for this book because of all the negativity and hate thrown at this book.
1) I like the male narrator. I don’t think he sounds old. The actual actor/narrator is not old. The addition of Casteel’s voice was good.
2) There’s a story arc to this book which is completed in the book. There’s also a larger arc that is revealed in the book which allows for another book. Neither took me by surprise, given that I’ve read the prequel and both make sense to me for this series as a whole. I don’t feel like this book was any more unnecessarily drawn out than the last two. Could it have moved faster? Sure, but the pace didn’t bother me and isn’t outside the norm for a lot of books in this genre or JLA more broadly.
3) I try not to place personal expectations of what “should” happen in a series and let the author reveal what happens. It’s a made up world. Made up characters. Everything that happened in this book made sense to me given the portrayal of the characters and their emotions/qualities/relationships (as opposed to what I would expect from someone with X character trait (e.g., possessive, which people seem to focus on a lot in the comments)). Given that, I was neither surprised nor bothered by the events in the book.
4) This book focuses less overall on the romance side of things (which people criticized the last couple for too much or repetitive of that) and more on the fantasy world building and other character development. It also built up the relationship (and IMO strengthened the emotional bond) between the main characters, making it more solid.
5) I think the biggest criticism that can be leveled at this book is that it could have been “more.” Could have moved the plot more or had more detail about other “things” (nudge nudge wink wink no spoilers). It seemed like a pretty standard “let’s move the plot along” book number 4/5 of a series of 6/7/+. Will it be the best in the series? No. Does it deserve even half the ire thrown at it? Very much no.

Historia
Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

Genuinely excellent

I listened to Circe first based on the overall reviews but I liked this one even better. The story is well-told and engaging, even though we know the stories from Homer. The cynic in me thinks the ratings aren’t higher because people feel uncomfortable with the protagonists’ gay relationship, but who knows.
