This was the first book by Methos that I’ve read/listened to but it won’t be my last. The suspense was solid. The characters were interesting and sympathetic. I’m so intrigued by Judge Dawson (ugh… was that her name?) She is super interesting. Can’t wait to read my next one.

As always Saskia Maarleveld was perfect! I love her narration.

My first & last Colleen Hoover

I’d never read one of Hoover’s books so I thought I’d try this one. At first, I liked it because I liked Kenna and was rooting for her. She was fully fledged and sympathetic and interesting. I just ended up not liking the way Hoover handled her.

First, graphic, drawn-out sex scenes always turn me off. They add absolutely nothing to the story or the characters’ development. Nothing. They are the rotten fruit on the ground, not even the low-hanging fruit that authors often grasp for when trying to tell a story or hook a reader. So, she lost me there, but I kept reading, hoping the story would make it worth the gratuitous sex. It didn’t.

I finally ended up speeding up the book to 1.5 (I’d have sped it up more if I could have understood the narrators) and then I skipped from chapter 35 to the last chapter (effectively skipping 20% of the book). I wanted to know if it was a HEA or more hand-wringing and gratuitous trauma.

I didn’t care for the vehicles of the letters Kenna wrote to Scotty to tell (literally TELL) the reader that part of the story. They weren’t convincing as letters. They were just a rather lazy way to TELL the reader that part of the story. When she was reading the letters to Ledger (and seriously, can we stop and stare, dumbfounded, for a moment at those names—Ledger & Diem???), I almost stopped listening then. It was overdrawn, overwritten, and ridiculous. I think it would have had a much better (read authentic) effect had Hoover written these as flashbacks instead of letters. It would have been more active and taken the reader to those places and times much better.

So, this, as I said, is my first and last foray into Colleen Hoover’s list.

Brittany Presley was as annoying reading this as she is reading everything else. I can’t remember the man’s name right now, but he was pretty good.

Didn’t know what to expect as this author is new to me. (Always enjoy Therese Plummer!)

It was an interesting twist on time-travel suspense/horror. I’ll be happy to listen to more from this author.

I was so excited about getting to read/listen to this short little snippet of Duffy's life. (I was honestly a little appalled that it was only 1.5 hours long and Audible wanted $8+ for it--or a whole credit--but I bought it anyway.) I'm not sorry that I listened to this, but I'm not really happy that I did either.

Mostly, it was Duffy being Duffy, which is fine. I like Duffy. That's why I've listened to the whole series at least three or four times now. (I listened to the whole thing again before listening to the brand-new novel, Hang on St. Christopher this week.)

There was just something about this little story that bothered me. It kind of felt like McKinty wrote it for the money and not to really explore anything new with our favorite RUC DI. Like I said, it was Duffy being Duffy. I laughed a few times. I enjoyed seeing him move into 113 Coronation Road. But it wasn't new.

I also seem to be the outlier on this, but there's a part where Duffy takes some acid (Duffy likes his alcohol and his recreational drugs, so again, nothing new) and he talks to a dog. And then a tree. On the socials, I saw that a lot of people seemed to really enjoy that. I thought it was ridiculous and was a little peeved that so much of the 1.5 hours of the story was this scene. (However long it lasted, it was too long for me.)

Oh, well. Art is what it is. Subjective.

Gerard Doyle was aces, as usual.

I wasn’t sure I wanted another Duffy book. I loved the way McKinty wrapped things up in The Detective Up Late and I feared where this book would take us and what would happen to Duffy. Would he be killed? Or worse, become a disappointing cliche?

I won’t spoil anything, but I enjoyed this book very much. It wasn’t my favorite Duffy, but it was very good.

Gerard Doyle was great, as always. He did sound at times like he had a head cold, but that didn’t affect my enjoyment of his narration.

Overall I really enjoyed this time-travel romance. The characters were fully fleshed and interesting. I cared about them—MCs and supporting cast alike. That’s important to me.

I struggled with the dual timelines a little because they were essentially the same timeline but different. I got lost a few times and had to pause and reorient myself, remind myself of the differences between the two and where we were in the story.

There’s a lot to root for and many reasons to listen.

The narration was great.

If you like/love Dee MacDonald, you’ll like/love the Old Ducks. I was hoping this would compare well to MacDonald’s work and it does.

I enjoyed each of the characters very much. I hope in eight to ten years, when I would be their ages, I’ll be as fun-loving and independent as they are—as they came to see themselves and to want to be, anyway—by the end.

The setting was fantastic. I’d love to visit Rhodes.

There’s nothing complicated or very surprising in this book. It’s just light, relatable, comfortable reading. I’ll be going back for more of the Old Ducks and more from Please outside this series.

The narration was great.

I'm up for the next in the series

I couldn't decide whether to round up or down because this was a solid 3.5 for me. I went ahead and rounded up because there's a lot to like.

I enjoyed the setting. I've listened to a lot of books set in Northern Ireland and Ireland, but few set in Scotland. I'm sure I'll seek out more now that I've read this.

The mystery of what happened to Isla and D.I. Duncan McAdam's search for the truth kept me interested and listening. I was invested in both Isla's and Duncan's stories, and neither disappointed me. I was glad I kept reading.

With that said, there were so many characters it was really hard to keep track of who everyone was and how they were all connected to Isla. I think the plethora of people was necessary for the story and probably also as foundational work for the series and the other books to come. It was just a lot to try to remember and keep track of. Maybe that would have been easier had I read it and not listened to it?

Angus King is such a pleasure to listen to--he was the main reason I picked up this book. I enjoyed it enough that I'll seek out the next in the series.

Poignant story. Well-developed characters. Great narration. It was free but I would have happily paid for it.
