Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.

It’s an area of American history that’s not covered near enough.
Revisado: 02-26-24
I love most of Kristen Hannah’s work to date. This one won’t be at the top of the list. Frankie’s life post Vietnam got bogged down, and unrealistic. Her friendships were, naive even cringe worthy. I have great friendships. Not one of them have the luxury to drop everything to come running every time there is a crisis. Come on!

Historia
Carolyn's not so different from the other human beings around her. After all, she was a normal American herself once. That was a long time ago, of course - before the time she calls "adoption day", when she and a dozen other children found themselves being raised by a man they learned to call Father.

I think it’s the most unique fantasy/horror story I’ve ever read. The narrator is perfect.

Harry Hole does it again
Revisado: 06-10-23
Love the series. Can’t stand John Lee. His diction is like a 30’s B movie. Almost comical. Now if Audible would use a fantastic narrator like Steven Pacey what a truly win, win book it would be. John Lee needs to retire.

Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Historia
Sixteen-year-old Charlie Ovid, despite a brutal childhood in Mississippi, doesn't have a scar on him. His body heals itself, whether he wants it to or not. Marlowe, a foundling from a railway freight car, shines with a strange bluish light. He can melt or mend flesh. When a jaded female detective is recruited to escort them to safety, all three begin a journey into the nature of difference, and belonging, and the shadowy edges of the monstrous. What follows is a story of wonder and betrayal.

Shadows of Penny Dreadful
Revisado: 06-15-22
One of the best storylines in this genre I’ve had the pleasure of listening to in years. The narration is beyond perfection. Perfect pitch in every way. First time author has a solid , creative grasp of the supernatural genre.
Ben Owukwe should be teaching narrators how to do their job. It’s the difference between just reading a story, and creating magic. I’ve stopped listening to many books simply because the narrative was too awful to carry on. Looking forward to the next book in this series!

Touched my heart
Revisado: 10-28-16
What made the experience of listening to The Master Butcher's Singing Club the most enjoyable?
The intricate development of the characters.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Master Butcher's Singing Club?
Step and a half. I loved her character, with a brilliant surprise that had an element of magical realism.
Which character – as performed by Louise Erdrich – was your favorite?
Step and a half
If you could take any character from The Master Butcher's Singing Club out to dinner, who would it be and why?
It would be wonderful to have them all at my table. I could narrow it down to Cyprian, Delphine, and Step and a half. Couldn't choose just one.

Historia
The story begins in 1962. On a rocky patch of the sun-drenched Italian coastline, a young innkeeper, chest-deep in daydreams, looks out over the incandescent waters of the Ligurian Sea and spies an apparition: a tall, thin woman, a vision in white, approaching him on a boat. She is an actress, he soon learns, an American starlet, and she is dying. And the story begins again today, half a world away, when an elderly Italian man shows up on a movie studio's back lot - searching for the mysterious woman he last saw at his hotel decades earlier.

This story has Heart and Soul.
There are so many great reviews previously written I don't think there is anything new I could add.
I could listen to Edoardo Bellerini read the ingredients on a cereal box and it would take it to the next level. Listening to him read this book is sublime.

Historia
Helene Wecker's dazzling debut novel tells the story of two supernatural creatures who appear mysteriously in 1899 New York. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a strange man who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. When her master dies at sea on the voyage from Poland, she is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York Harbor. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian Desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop.

Any additional comments?
I liked to premise using the Golem & Jinni. Part folklore, part theological argument, part supernatural, the story takes place primarily in turn of the century New York City. I looked at this for awhile before deciding to listen. Drawn to the Golem & Jinni concept & George Guidall happens to be one of my favorite narrators. This is a very entertaining, thought provoking listen.

Historia
Meet Jake. A bit on the elderly side (he turns 201 in March), but you’d never suspect it. Nonstop sex and exercise will do that for you - and a diet with lots of animal protein. Jake is a werewolf, and after the unfortunate and violent death of his one contemporary, he is now the last of his species. Although he is physically healthy, Jake is deeply distraught and lonely.

Jake, one sexy horn dog!
Revisado: 09-22-12
What made the experience of listening to The Last Werewolf the most enjoyable?
This is a werewolf story for grown ups at last! He's bored, and droll, sexy, & funny. I thought only Anne Rice could write like this, I'm glad I was wrong.
Would you be willing to try another book from Glen Duncan? Why or why not?
yes
What about Robin Sachs’s performance did you like?
Perfect
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
It was just good story telling.
