Historia
Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, and Nero - these are the names history associates with the early Roman Empire. Yet, not a single one of these emperors was the blood son of his predecessor. In this captivating history, a prominent scholar of the era documents the Julio-Claudian women whose bloodline, ambition, and ruthlessness made it possible for the emperors' line to continue. Eminent scholar Guy de la Bedoyere, author of Praetorian, asserts that the women behind the scenes - including Livia, Octavia, and the elder and younger Agrippina - were the true backbone of the dynasty.

Fills a Large Gap in Roman History!
Revisado: 12-01-19
This book was an excellent read and wonderfully narrated! I would recommend it to anyone interested in First Century to Third Century Roman history. But most of all, to any readers interested in the very strong part Roman women played as movers and "kingmakers" during that age.

Historia
In rural Virginia, Young and Pak Yoo run an experimental medical treatment device known as the Miracle Submarine - a pressurized oxygen chamber that patients enter for therapeutic "dives" with the hopes of curing issues like autism or infertility. But when the Miracle Submarine mysteriously explodes, killing two people, a dramatic murder trial upends the Yoos’ small community. Who or what caused the explosion? Was it the mother of one of the patients, who claimed to be sick that day but was smoking down by the creek? Or was it Young and Pak themselves?

Historia
Following Germania and Danubia, the third installment in Simon Winder's personal history of Europe. In 843 AD, the three surviving grandsons of the great emperor Charlemagne met at Verdun. After years of bitter squabbles over who would inherit the family land, they finally decided to divide the territory and go their separate ways. In a moment of staggering significance, one grandson inherited the area we now know as France, another Germany, and the third received the piece in between: Lotharingia.

When novelist Manuel Ortigosa learns that his husband, Álvaro, has been killed in a car crash, it comes as a devastating shock. It won’t be the last. He’s now arrived in Galicia. It’s where Álvaro died. It’s where the case has already been quickly closed as a tragic accident. It’s also where Álvaro hid his secrets. The man to whom Manuel was married for fifteen years was not the unassuming man he knew.

Clever and Classy!
Revisado: 05-05-19
I thoroughly enjoyed this work by Dolores Redondo. It went into far more depth than most in this genre. Clashes between the present and the past, different social classes, belief systems, and wounds both of the body and soul were wonderfully and believingly portrayed. I also enjoyed the depth and quality of the narration.

Historia
A small boy speaking an unknown language is abandoned by his father at an international airport, with only the clothes on his back and a handful of money jammed in the pocket of his coat. In order to understand this heartbreaking and indefensible decision, the story must return to the moment, decades earlier, when Vollie Frade, almost on a whim, enlists in the US Marine Corps to fight in Vietnam. Breaking definitively from his rural Iowan parents, Vollie puts in motion an unimaginable chain of events that sees him go to work for insidious people with intentions he cannot yet grasp.

Well Worth a Decade Long Wait!
Revisado: 03-29-19
Salvatore Scibona's characters know the intimacy of despair and the gnawing hollowness of desperation. They know that no matter how many surround us in life, we are still mostly alone and then completely alone at death. Yet they still have the courage to dream and grasp at life and renewal. I also enjoy Scibona's sense of time, history and social mores. Plus, he also has a great ability to show the hidden but meaningful connections between the people who inhabit his wonderful books. "The Volunteer" was well worth the decade + wait since his masterful "The. End" was published!

Historia
Fifteen linked stories chart a true course through the lives of families, farmers, loggers, former classmates, and the occasional stripper. In the richly imagined town of Renata, Oregon, a man watches his neighbor's big-screen TV through binoculars, an errant son paints himself silver, mysterious electrical humming emanates from an enormous barn. In A Simplified Map of the Real World, intimate boundaries are loosened by history - and high above the strife and the hope and the often hilarious, geese seek the perfect tailwind. Stevan Allred's stunning debut deftly navigates the stubborn geography of the human heart.

Heart and Soul and Original!
Revisado: 03-27-19
A great author and also a very good narrator, Stevan Allred's (I swear no relation to me!) collection of stories about Renata-a fictional small town in Oregon-is so varied and original that it is the best collection I have read in over a year. His characters cover the full spectrum of human idiosyncrasies--from the ultra uncool, to rage filled, jealous, breaking down , loyal, unloyal, successful, homeless--and on... I can't wait to hear more from this man in the future!

Superb, heartbreaking, and true!
Revisado: 03-25-19
I can't say enough good about this book! Typically, I only leave "starred" reviews and that is probably making it seem like every book I read on Audible is a 4 or 5 star to me. But this isn't the case--i just don't read fiction that isn't a 3 or above for me because of time constraints. This bildungsroman of Wes Ballot is a 5 plus. I will read anything by this author in the future!

Great Suspense!
Revisado: 10-28-18
This book had a wonderful tightly wound plot.
The language was concise and evoked images of both terror and mystery that were believable and spine chilling. I have heard that one out of ten Icelanders is an author of some sort and I will be a very loyal reader of Sigurdardottir if this book is even remotely like the rest!

Historia
In a parched Southern California of the near future, Luz, once the poster child for the country's conservation movement, and Ray, an army deserter turned surfer, are squatting in a starlet's abandoned mansion. Most "Mojavs", prevented by armed vigilantes from freely crossing borders to lusher regions, have allowed themselves to be evacuated to encampments in the east. Holdouts like Ray and Luz subsist on rationed cola and water and whatever they can loot, scavenge, and improvise.

Revisado: 10-18-18
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was all of these things at once in each sentence: original, poetic, thoughtful, and each major character so true--I could envision them! I hope to read more by this author very soon!
