Historia
Faust is one of the pillars of Western literature. This classic drama presents the story of the scholar Faust, tempted into a contract with the Devil in return for a life of sensuality and power. Enjoyment rules, until Faust’s emotions are stirred by a meeting with Gretchen, and the tragic outcome brings Part 1 to an end. Part 2, written much later in Goethe’s life, places his eponymous hero in a variety of unexpected circumstances, causing him to reflect on humanity and its attitudes to life and death.

The translation and performances are phenomenal, and the actors do an incredible job. I have no idea how someone could translate this work, and I salute the translator here. However this is an abridged dramatization of the real play. Anyone interested in the full experience of the many important insights of this work should dig a little deeper than this version. This version is very good as an intro, or as a revisitation, but not as the basis of primary study.

Historia
Fyodor Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment is universally regarded as one of literature's finest achievements, as the great Russian novelist explores the inner workings of a troubled intellectual. Raskolnikov, a nihilistic young man in the midst of a spiritual crisis, makes the fateful decision to murder a cruel pawnbroker, justifying his actions by relying on science and reason, and creating his own morality system. Dehumanized yet sympathetic, exhausted yet hopeful, Raskolnikov represents the best and worst elements of modern intellectualism. The aftermath of his crime and Petrovich's murder investigation result in an utterly compelling, truly unforgettable cat-and-mouse game. This stunning dramatization of Dostoevsky's magnum opus brings the slums of St. Petersburg and the demons of Raskolnikov's tortured mind vividly to life.

Great Narration, best modern novel ever written.
Revisado: 01-28-21
Deep, passionate, painful, tense, contemplative, brave, and thorough. The natural history of the modern psyche is dramatized in this book. And George Guidall was PERFECT!

Historia
The writer who did most to establish prose as a force in Russian literary culture was Nikolai Gogol. Gogol's example combined with the pronouncements of the literary critics of the period, established prose as the literary medium of the future. Fyodor Dostoevsky is supposed to have said, referring to himself and his fellow Realists, "We have all come out from under Gogol's "Overcoat".

Wow.

How much of the future of Russian history did that story contain?? Deep. Profound. Sad. Humorous. Rather painful. This story is a masterpiece.

This heartfelt reading of this heartfelt book should be playing in your car every time you drive somewhere. This book is the true voice of reason in 2000-something. I really think the honesty and the emphasis on negotiation is invaluable for these times.
It's a fascinating idea that "liberal" and "conservative" viewpoints are so highly heritable. This idea has taught me that as long as PEOPLE are being born, leftists and right-wingers will be born... and exist together as adults. A book like this illustrates and demonstrates the realistic and practical NEGOTIATING-mindset that everybody should be adopting today. Polarization is futile, unstable, and murderous when it's carried out to its end. Liberals and conservatives can work things out just fine if they would be honest with eachother. "Stand up straight", "be honest", and "aim at the highest good". Anybody who would try to argue against those ideas is a bigot and a tyrant.
The existence of this writing in audio format has officially removed any valid excuse to not finish this book. Read it. Listen to it. And think about it while you do so. YOU WILL LEARN A LOT FROM THIS BOOK.
