What stood out most: how potent and fearless love is.
Revisado: 12-07-24
I like that the author did not get caught in that Jane Austen trap of endless misunderstandings and tedious back and forth miscommunication. The author had several times she could have dragged the story out veering down unnecessary paths but she did not; I like her style.

England, 1914. The world is at war. Captain Hastings, injured and shaken, is invited to Styles Court to recover. It’s a grand old country house - the family home of his old friend - and a perfect haven. Or so it seems. But in the blistering summer heat, trouble is afoot. Simmering tensions are tearing the family apart, and it all comes to a head in the most horrifying way.

Peter's Poirot is decadent and thrilling
Revisado: 11-28-24
Peter Dinklage what's not to love? his voice, performance, earthiness he's just wonderful. the rest weren't bad either. I loved it! we need more of Dinklage as Hercule Poirot.

I tried God knows I tried, I couldn't do it
Revisado: 09-23-24
THE NARRATOR IS STELLAR. The story nope, I couldn't finish this book. first point of disgust: the rape scene because there was something mixed in the salt? are you kidding me? Merlin is a brainiac raised by her uncle another Brainiac and the chemical equations on the salt that she pulls down doesn't tell her something else is in the salt? this book demeans female engineers, doctors, scientists as though if you have breasts and a brain you lack common sense. Merlin is a dim-witted twit; when she asked the young boy had he been kidnapped too, I thought oh my goodness can she get any dumber. this is the woman the Duke wants to marry and represent him as his Duchess, good grief Charlie Brown. I am getting my credit back!

Historia
James de Vere has always insisted on being perfectly pragmatic and rational in all things. It seemed the only way to deal with his overdramatic, greedy family. When he falls ill and no doctor in London can diagnose him, he returns home to Grace Hill in search of a physician who can - or to set his affairs in order. Arriving at the doctor's home, he's surprised to encounter the doctor's daughter Laura, a young woman he last saw when he was warning her off an attachment with his cousin Graeme. Alas, the doctor is recently deceased and Laura is closing up the estate.

Genuinely adore this type of romance story
Revisado: 10-02-23
The undercurrents of this love story grips and holds you. The relationships between Laura and James, James and Claude are well written. This story has everything misunderstandings, understandings, action, passion without vulgarity, intense emotions, This is one of my favorites on Audible. The narrator is excellent, he does "crazy" very well. when the crazy came out I was rolling.

At their wits' end, her parents believe a few months in seclusion will teach her to appreciate her privileged existence, and accept the next gentleman of worth who offers for her.

Baily & Campbell hit a home run
Revisado: 08-25-23
Baily brought the anguish of war front and center. Rhetorical enlistment hype has its place, but war's horrors are seldom openly discussed. We don't want to hear about let alone think about what is done in the name of peace. Baily has written an honest, somewhat-spicy romance facing life's truest struggles head on.
Tim Campbell is a superb narrator!

Two vicious vile rapes to what end?
Revisado: 04-30-23
Twice in this book Miss Riley embarked on rape; twice in this book she miserably failed the emotional telling of both. NOTE TO WRITERS: No one having suffered rape will "get over it" in 6 weeks. Profoundly disgusted with this book. Mr Wyndham is an exceptional performer.
